Anytime somebody calls their album Apocalypse you can reasonably assume that it's either a metal album or it's going to be a bit of a downer. But in the instance of the latest record from singer-songwriter Bill Callahan it's not really either. It's definitely not metal and it's not really a downer but at the same time it isn't exactly what you'd want to play at your super-happy-American-fun-time-dance-party. This would really be more appropriate for when you decide to become a hermit and move to the woods and live off the land. It kind of feels like a cross between Gil Scott-Heron and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.
Truth be told, the record company sent me the album for free and I feel a little obligated to mention it on the blog. I'm actually really enjoying it, to be honest. You can take a listen to the first single from the record called "Baby's Breath." Apocalypse is due out April 19th from Drag City.
