Saddle Creek Adds two New Bands to Label

The Rural Alberta Advantage (top) UUVVWWZ (bottom)

Our favorite label out of Omaha just announced that they have signed two new bands and those two bands are The Rural Alberta Advantage from Toronto via Alberta and UUVVWWZ from Lincoln NE. Check out the tracks below to see if they are something you can get behind. And by "get behind" I mean buying their albums that are both coming out on July 7th and NOT jumping on their backs and scratching their eyes out...that would just be rude and uncalled for.

Wilco - "Jolly Banker"

Wilco has made a new song available for download on their website. The song "Jolly Banker" was originally written and performed by Woody Guthrie. You can either choose to download the song for free or you can make a donation of your choice to the Woody Guthrie Foundation.

2009: The Year Of The Lady

There have been some amazing records released so far in 2009. It seems like week after week there is a new release that comes along and dominates my iTunes only to be replaced by another quality album the following week. The best part about the whole thing is that it's only April.

One thing I have noticed is that this year, so far, has been mostly dominated by the ladies. If I were to look at my top ten favorite releases so far this year seven out of ten would be from either a female soloist or a band fronted by a female singer.

St. Vincent, Micachu & The Shapes, Neko Case, Fever Ray, Laura Gibson are just a few of the women to put out amazing albums this year.

Don't get me wrong, there have been some great releases from the fellas as well. And, we're only five months into the year. I'm eagerly anticipating new releases from Grizzly Bear and Wilco who could help even out that top 10 list of mine. Just seems like this year seems to be a pretty female dominated year in terms of great albums.

What do you think?

Dinosaur Jr. - "I Want You To Know"

Check out the song "I Want You To Know" from Dinosaur Jr, which is off their latest album Farm.

The album Farm is available on 6/23 from Jagjaguwar.

Video: Sonic Youth-"What We Know"(Live on Jools Holland)

Sonic Youth make an appearance on Jools Holland's show to perform the track "What We Know" from their forthcoming album The Eternal.

You can pick up The Eternal when it is released on June 9th from Sub Pop.

Previously: Sonic Youth - "Sacred Trickster"(MP3)

video: Starfucker "Medicine"

Starfucker is dope, I have reviewed their album, their show at the Rhythm Room, their skills at Scrabble and interviewed them, let me tell you that the viewing of this new video has done NOTHING to make me change my feelings on the subject of their dopeness.

The Mots are from New Zealand

So in the course of my regular Wed afternoon ritual of searching for really good bands from New Zealand I discovered The Mots and now you should also...mostly because they are good and also because I said so and if you ask anybody I know I get really butt hurt when people don't do what I say.

British Sea Power - "Come Wander With Me"

British Sea Power have been recently completed work on providing a soundtrack for the re-release of the 1934 classic film The Man of Aran. The film is a dramatized documentary which portrays the hardships of life on the Aran Islands, which is located off the western coast of Ireland. The DVD/CD combo will be released on May 5th from Rough Trade.

Wilco Has Named their New Album

I have been waiting with my breath held for this new album for a long time now so any new nugget of news lets me breath for a second. So they pulled out all the creative steps and came up with this NUCLEAR EXPLOSION of an album name "Wilco (the album)"
June 30 is the date to mark on your calendar.

Here's the track listing:

Wilco The Song
Deeper Down
One Wing
Bull Black Nova
You And I
You Never Know
Country Disappeared
Solitaire
I'll Fight
Sunny Feeling
Everlasting

John Vanderslice - "Too Much Time"

Here is another song from John Vanderslice's forthcoming album Romanian Names. The song "Too Much Time" is listed on Vanderslice's website as being one of his favorite tracks from the record. I personally like "Fetal Horses" more than I like this song. What do you guys think?

Romanian Names won't be out until May 19th but if you just can't wait that long you can pre-order the album here and get an immediate download of the album. Also, if you are one of the first 100, you'll recieve a limited-edition, letterpressed wallet containing a small snippet of analog tape which has unused music from the master recording of Romanian Names.

John Vanderslice - "Too Much Time"

For the locals, you can catch John Vanderslice with The Tallest Man On Earth when they play Modified Arts on June 28th.

pics: Flaming Lips at McDowell MT. Festival

So we were unable to attend this festival in person due to the fact that we didn't have tickets but our good friend Joey V tells us that it was pretty mind tripping (he had fungal assistance) He was kind enough to take some pics for us and then email them to me this morning so now I am posting them on this very internet website for you. I love it when a plan comes together!

Tuesday Concert Calendar: Courtney Marie Andrews, Pretty & Nice

A couple of interesting shows tonight here in the valley of the sun. For you metal heads out there you've got Black Label Society along with Sevendust, Dope, and Cycle of Pain performing at Marquee tonight. Boston band Pretty & Nice hit up Modified Arts tonight and Baltimore based Abiku will be playing The Trunk Space.

My personal recommendation, however, is to head on over to The Lost Leaf Gallery for a free show featuring some of Phoenix's top musical acts. Tonight, River Jones Music will showcase some of their most talented acts including Courtney Marie Andrews, Michelle Blades, Zachary James Dodds, and You, Me, and Apollo. Courtney Marie Andrews is one of my favorite local musical acts. She recently contributed the track "Red Handed Aesthetic Attraction" to the compilation Phoenix: We Love It and it was hands down my favorite track on the album.

As always be sure to check out SilverPlatter.info for a list of all the concerts and events happening tonight in Phoenix.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart: Young Adult Friction [Slumberland]

Hey look, that skeleton is singing! This video was either directed by a director or not. I am not sure, but I like it non the less. Keep it real horny America!

New Music Tuesday: Crocodiles, Bob Dylan

It's a pretty slow week this week in terms of new releases.

One album that I've have heard and would highly recommend is the new album from Crocodile entitled Summer Of Hate. I have to admit that I'm not too familiar with the band but the album has been streaming in its entirety over at MBV and will be all week if you want to listen before you buy.

Also out this week is Bob Dylan's latest Together Through Life. This latest release is Dylan's 46th album.

Here are a few more recommendations for this week.

A Camp: Colonia

Crocodiles: Summer Of Hate

Bob Dylan: Together Through Life

Great Northern: Remind Me Where the Light Is

The Green Pajamas: Poison in the Russian Room

Wilco: Ashes of American Flags (dvd)

Miniature Tigers Perform On The Train Tracks

Just before embarking on their next tour around the country, local favorites Miniature Tigers hopped on the light rail and performed an acoustic version of their song "Last Night's Fake Blood" from their album Tell It to the Volcano. The performance was captured for one of my favorite websites The Train Tracks and is now available for your viewing pleasure.

You can also catch Miniature Tigers when they play The Phix along with Kevin Devine on May 15th.

Watch: Miniature Tigers - "Last Night's Fake Blood"

X-Men Origins: Wolverine World Premiere

Okay, okay, I know this isn't a movie blog, but Will.I.Am was there so it is loosely music related.

Shawn and I headed down to the world premiere of the new movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This was the first chance either of us had to go to a fancy pants Hollywood movie premiere, but hopefully not the last. I won't lie, there were parts of the premiere that were frustrating. We had to wait in line a lot and I felt crowd control could have been organized better. But, overall I thought the experience was awesome.

The crowd at Tempe Marketplace was really into the whole thing and hopefully convinced Fox executives to have other movie premiers here in Phoenix. The cast of the movie seemed very cool. Particularly, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds. They just seem like bros we can hang out with.

The movie itself was pretty good. Way better then the last X-men movie, X-Men: The Last Stand. Although, this latest movie did rank pretty high on my cheese factor scale. Lots of summer blockbuster cliches. If you're into those sort of things, though, or you like the previous X-Men movies then I definitely recommend this one to you.

video: Flying - "Morning Song"

This video is just cool. I want to know how long it took to get all of that footage of horses going to sleep. No really Jeannie Simms please contact me and let me know how long that took. Did you shoot all the horses yourself or did you scour the "sleeping horse" database for hours?Check out Flying on tour with Deerhoof.

Or, The Whale Playing in Tucson

As you may or may not know we usually have a harsh words for bands that totally skip Phoenix but they are at least going to play in Tucson (Phoenix's little sister) so we are going to let is slide this time BUT ONLY THIS TIME Or, The Whale!!! Next time you better come to Phoenix, and I expect a pair of tickets to the show and a coupon for a deep tissue massage at the parlor of my choice. I guess you can listen to the this song and check out the rest of the dates below...I guess.

Video: Doom - "Microwave Mayo"

I love fan made videos. Sometimes even more so than videos directed by "professional" directors. There is just something so cool about the DIY nature of the video. Take, for instance, this video directed by Dallas Penn, for the song "Microwave Mayo" from Doom (formerly MF Doom). Penn takes a classic concept of filming a lawn gnome in front of different places and updates it by taking a Doctor Doom action figure and filming it in various locations around New York City. Awesome!

The song "Microwave Mayo" is from the album Born Like This available now from Lex Records.

Who: Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Michael McKean

video: Deerhoof "Numina"

Numina is the new video from Deerhoof's new album Offend Maggie. Directed by Kate Hall, formerly of Mika Miko. I like when things are upside down because it makes me feel like I am a bat, or maybe even a possum. And they have both of those things in Australia and they also both sleep all day and party all night.

White Denim - "Mirrored and Reverse"(MP3)

Imagine my disappointment when one of my favorite bands, White Denim, roll into town and play at Modified Arts and I can't attend. I was so bummed. Sure, I had an important reason not to be at the show but that didn't help any with my sour mood that night.

Well, at least now I have some good news to help me forget about all of that. Well, sort of. White Denim are set to release their latest album Fits on June 22nd on the UK label Full Time Hobby. That's great news for those in the UK but unfortunately and for reasons I can not comprehend White Denim still does not have a US record label. On the bright side, however, we've got the an mp3 from the album courtesy of NME. Listen to "Mirrored and Reverse" down below.

mp3: What's Up "Harper"

So I have never heard of What's Up? till today but I can tell you that from what I have heard from them so far on the 3 songs on their MySpace and the new song below they are pretty crazy but in a good way. They have tagged themselves as "Neo Soul/Fusion" on their MySpace page but I have no idea what that means so I wouldn't get to involved trying to explain them to your mom or anything. Just check out the songs and if you are going to Superfest in Portland on June 28th you can check them out live. They also have a new album coming out on May 19th called Content Imagination from Obey Your Brain

Girl Talk Might Make Whole Songs...Kinda

Greg Gillis did an interview and said he has been "refining" his sound and the next album will have less jumping around through 9 million different song parts and focus on whole song structures with chorus's n' stuff. I might be jumping the gun when I say this but isn't that just going to be the same thing people like Danger Mouse already did and stopped doing a few years ago. I mean his style is what makes it so awesome. But then again I am sure he is going to find a way to make me want to shake my fat ass on the dance floor, or at least annoy my wife in the car. So I will withhold judgment till I hear it with my own ears. Your Welcome Girl Talk...your welcome.

Lollapalooza 2009 Line Up

click on poster for large size

Holy Crap that's alot of fine fine bands. I am REALLY trying to figure out how to make it to Chicago for Lalla this year. Come on man Animal Collective and Tool in the same festival. This makes Cochella look like my dead grandmas funeral, I might have to sell both of my kidneys AND kiddies to finance this shit but I think we can all agree that it would be worth it. I would sell my liver but I think by the time I got back it would not be worth much.

They even made a neat little video to celebrate this awesomeness

Iron and Wine - "The Trapeze Swinger"

On May 19th Sub Pop Records will release a new collections of songs from Iron and Wine entitled Around The Well. The collection of songs will span from the bands '02 debut album The Creek Drank to the '07 album Sheperd's Dog and other out-of-print and never before released songs. The albums title comes from a line in the song "The Trapeze Swinger" which was featured on the soundtrack to the film In Good Company. Iron and Wine has been a long time favorite of mine and I'm very much looking forward to this new collection. Check out the song "The Trapeze Swinger" below.

Wednesday Concert Calendar: Afrika Bambaataa, War On Drugs

A couple of interesting shows tonight in Phoenix with The War On Drugs playing Modified Arts and What Laura Says Thinks and Feels playing Vig but the show I'm most interested in seeing tonight would have to be Afrika Bambaataa. Be sure to check out SilverPlatter.info for a full list of shows and events happening tonight in Phoenix.

Who: Afrika Bambaataa
Where: The Bar Smith
When: 9:00 PM Showtime
How Much: $10
Why: Afrika Bambaataa is a hip-hop pioneer and a major influence on many of today's biggest and best in the rap game. He's also considered by many to be the father of the electro funk sound. No argument from anyone here.

Dan Deacon @ The Clubhouse 4/20/2009

Last night was crazy! My ears are still ringing and my mind is just becoming un-melted. I can now officially say that Dan Deacon and Ensemble put on the most sensory effing show I have ever been to. We walked out of there hot and bothered in a good way. Let me give you a little re-cap of the "activities" that we did. We closed our eyes and spun around in circles bumping into each other like excited atoms, there was much "fancy dancing" and I got to run the gauntlet an experience my shoulders are still sore from (I will be posting up some videos of the fancy dancing and beginning of the gauntlet later today)

The sound was awesome, the Ensemble are a great addition to the live show and I can't imagine Dan even NOT having them or some variation in the future. Once you have 3 drummers playing 3 separate parts all at the same time and doing it perfectly in sync with the "electronic" music is the balls and something everyone should see.

I was surprised at the low turnout but the people that did show up had tons of energy so even though there was a ton of empty space behind us once you were smashed up front with everybody you felt like you were at the front of a 100 thousand strong crowd. Check out some pictures (more pics HERE) of Dan and the opening bands Teeth Mountain and Future Islands who were also both pretty dang good, I didn't get a whole lot of Dan since he was down on the floor and I am short, but I did my best ;-) Oh and Dan was cool enough to do an interview with us before the show...we are going to have that up tomorrow. Check out all the pics after the break.

New Music Tuesday: Camera Obscura, Cage The Elephant, Art Brut

Out this week is the latest album from the Scottish group Camera Obscura. The album, My Maudlin Career, was labeled under the "best new music" category and given an 8.3 by Pitchfork. I had a chance to stream the album thanks to NPR the other day and from what I heard this should definitely be one to pick up this week.

Other albums to check out this week are Art Brut's latest Art Brut vs. Satan, Janes Addiction's Cabinet Of Curiosities Box Set, and King Khan and The Shrines' re-released album What Is?!

Also out today is Depeche Mode's latest Sounds Of The Universe which Amazon is selling for only $3.99 if you buy the mp3 album. Hey, we got pay bills too, ya know.

Brooklyn duo Matt & Kim have a new video for their song "Lesson Learned" and boy is it a doozie. This video has got everything; adventure, suspense, nudity and a surprising twist ending. Trust me you will not see the ending coming.

The song "Lesson Learned" is from Matt & Kim's album Grand which is available now via Fader Label.

The Streets - "See If They Salute"

Last week The Streets' Mike Skinner made three brand new Streets tracks available exclusively through his Twitter. After the success of the three previously released tracks, "I Love My Phone", "Trust Me", and "David Hassles" Skinner decided to give out a few new tracks this week as well. The first of these tracks is "See If They Salute". You can click here to download the new track.

Stream St. Vincent's New Album "Actor"

St. Vincent's follow up to her 2007 album Marry Me is without a doubt my most eagerly anticipated album of the year. We've already brought you a couple of tracks from the new album Actor and now you've got a chance to listen to the album in its entirety over at NPR. This is just another great album that NPR's First Listen Series has given us a chance to listen to.

Sonic Youth - "Sacred Trickster"

I know there are quite a few people out there who are very excited about the forthcoming album from Sonic Youth. Video: Ida Maria - "Oh My God"

The latest album from Ida Maria, Fortress Round My Heart, will definitely make it on to my list of top albums of the year. My hands down favorite song from the new album has to be "Oh My God". Lucky for me we've got a new video for that song. It's a pretty cool video with some very clever editing.

The album Fortress Round My Heart is available now on Mercury Records.

Miniature Tigers Visit Daytrotter

Local favorites Miniature Tigers stopped by Daytrotter to play some songs from their album Tell It To The Volcano as well as two unreleased songs "Egyptian Robe" and "Dark Tower". All of the songs sound fantastic and can be downloaded free and legal at the Daytrotter site. Below you can hear Miniature Tigers' song "Dino Damage".

Record Store Day

Tomorrow is the 2nd annual Record Store Day. For those not familiar, Record Store Day is the one day where independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases are made available exclusively for this day.

Several local valley record stores are participating in the event including Zia Records, Stinkweeds, Hoodlums, and more. For a full list of record stores around the valley and state wide who are participating in the Record Store Day festivities click here.

Each of the participating record stores have a slew of festivities lined up for the day from free food, free shwag, and live music. Stinkweeds in particular has a very impressive line-up of local musicians performing at their store tomorrow including Courtney Marie Andrews, Back Ted N-Ted, Fatigo, and Gospel Claws among others.

On top of all the free goodies and live music there are the uber rare and exclusive music that is available for purchase. Inventory will vary from store to store so be sure to check out your local records stores website for a list of what to expect but from what has already been announced you can expect to find music for purchase from Blitzen Trapper, Cursive, Silversun Pickups, Tom Waits, Iron and Wine, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and a whole lot more.

But it's not just exclusive vinyl that you'll be able to pick up. Also out tomorrow is the DVD release of Wilco's Ashes of America Flags. Personally, I'm excited about the compilation CD Phoenix: We Love It. This compilation features some of Phoenix's best local musical acts.

Tomorrow should be a good time for all and a great opportunity for you to support your local record store.

Sunset Rubdown - "Idiot Heart"

Sunset Rubdown are set to release their latest album Dragonslayer on June 23 via Jagjaguwar. But for those who just can't wait until June to start slaying some dragons we've got the first track off the new album, "Idiot Heart", for your listening pleasure. This should definitely fill that Sunset Rubdown need because the song is just over six minutes long. Enjoy!

Sunset Rubdown - "Idiot Heart"

The Streets - "David Hassles"(mp3)

Today brings us the last of the three new Streets tracks brought to us from Streets front man Mike Skinner. So far we've had "I Love My Phone" and "Trust Me" and today we get "David Hassles". This latest track is definitely my least favorite of the the three, but I'll let you decide for yourself. You can download "David Hassles" by clicking here. On a side note, I did think that Skinner giving away these songs through his twitter account was a very clever idea and would love to see more artists do the same.

Winter Gloves cover "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (mp3)

Winter Gloves have done a bang up job of covering Smells Like Teen Spirit so I think you can at least do them the favor if listening to it. Whats that? You don't want to? GOD YOU ARE SELFISH!

Winter Gloves: Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana Cover)

Wye Oak - "Take It In"(mp3)

Baltimore based band Wye Oak are set to release their album The Knot on July 21st via Merge Records. The follow up to their debut album If Children was recorded mostly in their Baltimore living room. Check out the first song from the new album, "Take It In".

Say Hi is Coming to Phoenix Ya'all

A great band that is enjoyed around the Electric Mustache offices that goes by the amended name Say Hi is coming to our sparkling city on May 17th. They are playing at The Rhythm Room, my favorite place to see a show with "room" in the name.

They are grabbing Cloud Cult out of the frozen north to entertain us more extra, so in my book that's pretty cool of them and my book is the definitive collection of things that are cool with me.

I will definitely be there and if you can spook me I will have that push up contest with Mike all of you have been asking for.

They are also on a tour of cities that I don't live in so check them out in a city nearest your house.

Tour Dates:
04-17-09 @ Live on KEXP at Caffe Vita -- Seattle, WA (11:30 am) (Listen here)

M. Ward's latest album Hold Time is available now from Merge.

Wednesday Concert Calendar: Atmosphere, P.O.S., Austin Gibbs

Some interesting shows tonight in Phoenix with Atmosphere and P.O.S. at Marquee Theater, Austin Gibbs at Modified, and Etta James at Celebrity Theatre. Personally, I recommend you stay home and watch Lost. Yeah, I know this isn't a television blog but c'mon.

Be sure to check out SilverPlatter.info for a list of all the shows and events happening tonight in Phoenix.

New The Streets - "Trust Me"(mp3)

It's day two of Mike Skinner giving away free tunes via his Twitter.

The latest track, "Trust Me", was just tweeted and boy is it a doozie. I'm really digging this track. You can download the track here. Tomorrow will bring the last of his promised three free tracks and we will bring you the track as soon as it becomes available. In the mean time enjoy the latest track and shake that booty.

Video: Phoenix - "Lisztomania"

Phoenix are having a pretty good year so far. They killed it on a recent episode of SNL and their latest album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is shaping up to be one of the best albums of the year. Check out their video for the song "Lisztomania" and be sure to pick up a copy of their latest album when it becomes available on 5/26 via Glass Note.

Grizzly Bear To Open For Wilco June 18th

TucsonScene.com just broke the news that Grizzly Bear will open for Wilco June 18th at Centennial Hall.  Both bands were slated to perform in Tucson on the 18th, Grizzly Bear at Rialto Theatre and Wilco at Centennial Hall.  Feeling that this would be problematic for fans the decision was made to have Grizzly Bear open up for Wilco.

Wow, that isn't so much a solution to a problem as it was a stroke of genius.  This pretty much guarantees that I'll be making the two hour trip to Tucson for this incredible show.

These tickets are sure to sell out fast so get them while you can.  Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. Arizona time and can be purchased here.

The Sucker "Suckers" EP

Um...oops we did it again, we may (and totally did) miss another new release today from an awesome band out of Brooklyn called The Suckers. Again it's another EP so it slipped under our radar of album releases but it's totally boss so we really want you to check it out with your money and then listen to it with your ears. In fact here is a track to listen to as a preview.

The Suckers: It Get's Your Body Movin

The Suckers EP is available today from I Am Sound

TV on the Radio "Read Silence" EP

So it appears that one item has slipped through the cracks here at Electric Mustache. TV On the Radio digitally released a new EP today called Read Silence and you can get it HERE via iTunes...it't only $2.49 so I have to say it's worth it just for the Gang Gang Dance remix of Stork and Owl. Oh and it's a remix EP from Dear Science but pretty awesome for fans of TV On the Radio n' such.

Here is the tracklist:

01 Shout Me Out (Willie Isz Remix by Jneiro Jarel)
02 Stork & Owl (Gang Gang Dance Remix)
03 Red Dress (THE GLITCH MOB Remix)

New The Streets - "I Love My Phone"

Mike Skinner of The Streets is planning on making three new tracks available via Twitter. The first of the previously unreleased tracks was just tweeted by Skinner.

You can download the track entitled "I Love My Phone" by clicking here. It's a pretty awesome tune. We'll bring you the rest of the tracks once they become available.

Oh, the joys of social media.

Video: Moby - "Shot In The Back Of The Head"

Several years ago I happened to catch Moby playing a show with Blink 182 and 311 at Cricket Pavilion. The crowd was filled with mostly white suburban punks who were there to see Blink and 311 and gave Moby a really hard time. Moby, in between songs told the audience, "I think the reason nobody likes me is because I don't have a number in my name." I nearly died laughing. Ever since then Moby has and always will be in my cool book.

This latest video for "Shot In The Back Of The Head" was directed by David Lynch. Not hard to believe if you're familiar with Lynch's previous work.

Moby is set to release his latest album Last Night on 6/30 via Mute.

Tuesday Concert Calendar: Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band

Tonight we are lucky to have Conor Oberst (aka Bright Eyes) & The Mystic Valley Band stop by the Marquee Theatre. For a full list of shows and events going on tonight be sure to check out SilverPlatter.info, but honestly if you're looking to see a show tonight it would be criminal to miss this one. You can call me the Hamburgler, because, sadly, I'm gonna miss it.

Who: Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band w/ Sleepercar, Deep Sea Diver
Where: Marquee Theatre
When: 7:00 PM Showtime
How Much: $20-$21
Why: Do you really need a reason to go check these guys out? If you do, the simpilest explanation given is that they are awesome. Expect them to play some new tunes off their forthcoming album Outer South which is out on May 5th from Merge Records.
Listen: Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band-"Nikorette"

Exclusive Starfucker Interview

It's no lie when people say I have a man crush on Starfucker, so when I had the opportunity to virtually interview them...I did. I asked them a whole gaggle of stupid questions and a couple serious ones and gave them and all of Portland a public service announcement and they responded with the kind of wit only a band called Starfucker could muster. Che check it out:

(Electric Mustache) In your new video when you wore dresses did they make you "tuck your junk" for safety reasons?

(Starfucker) Ya, but not for safety reasons, we just like the feel.

(EM) This is more of a warning than a question, but the guitar player in my old band moved to Portland, and he has herpes, so try to avoid him, his name is Joe and you will know him by the trail of sores.

(SF) OK cool. thanks for the heads up, but sadly i think about 75% of Portland has herpes.

(EM) What inspired you to cover "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"? Other than the obvious that is (its an awesome song).

(SF) I(Josh) had it as my ring tone..and ya, just the obvious.

(EM) Are you fortunate enough to not have day jobs when you are not on tour? And if so then congrats but what WOULD you be doing if you HAD to have jobs? And if you DO have day jobs what are they and do they involve food service?

(SF) 2 of us are fortunate to HAVE work when we're not on tour. the other 2 are on food stamps. i think we're close to being able to live on music but not quite there yet. and ya, one serves coffee, one makes websites or something. i used to work with old people as a caregiver but touring all the time doesn't really work with that.

(EM) Who is Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second and is he better or worse than Rawnald Gregory Erickson the First?

(SF) Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second is one of my favorite people in the world. he has a youtube show. he is someone who i always want to spend more time with. but he is always moving around doing stuff, so time with him is fleeting and magical.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IqCz3IvuaU

he didn't grow up with his dad and his dad died young-ish so i never met him. but i hear he was as crazy and awesome as the second.

(EM) Please pick one of the following animals that best describes your current thoughts on the economy (please explain answer and SHOW WORK):

1)ocelot
2)lemur
3)impala

(SF) Uh, prob impala- cause the car named after it was so popular to like low-ride and all that. but i mean, the lemur is really cute.

(EM) How long have you know each other?

(SF) Ryan and i have known each other for about 6 years. we used to play in another band(sexton Blake) together. Shawn joined us about a year 1/2 ago. and Keil about 2months ago?

(EM) If you had to pick one candy to take with you to space what would it be?

(SF) Does mango count? natures candy?

(EM) Do you guys collaborate on song writing duties?

(SF) Not in the recording and original songwriting process, but in arranging the live show, yes.

(EM) Any special plans for when your album comes out?

(SF) Well we're touring till may, then we might be touring again for may and June then...sleep? record more? we also might go to Europe in Sept I hope!

(EM) THANKS FOR ANSWERING THESE INANE QUESTIONS!!! Good luck on the rest of the tour and I will definitely be coming to see you again next time you come to Phoenix!!!

(SF) oh phoenix...hmm

Starfucker's new album Jupiter is out May 5th on

Deer Tick - "Easy"(mp3)

Here is the first track from Deer Tick's forthcoming album Born On Flag Day which available on 6/23 from Partisan Records.

mp3:
Deer Tick-"Easy"

Video: Black Dice - "Glazin"

I've never done acid before, but I'd like to think that I ever did it would be a lot like this video. I'd also like to think or at least I have to imagine that Brooklyn band Black Dice had to do a lot of acid in order to make their latest album, Repo. That's not to say that it's bad in any way just a whole lot of crazy. In a good way.

The album Repo is available now from Paw Tracks.

Gay Fish

Everywhere I go recently I can't help but hear people talking about the recent "Gay Fish" episode of South Park featuring Kanye West. If you haven't seen this episode then I'd just go ahead and skip this post until you have seen it, but go out and watch it quickly because you're the last person who hasn't. If you have seen it, then congratulations and good news, South Park Studios have just released the full and uncensored version of Trey Parker's "Gay Fish" as a free and legal mp3 download. But before bumping this jam on your work speakers be warned that it is NSFW. So put in your headphones, dummy.

Download: Trey Parker-"Gay Fish"

Just Announced: Wilco Coming To Tucson

Wilco obviously didn't read my last post on how annoying I find it when bands play Tucson over Phoenix. It's okay Wilco, I forgive you...this time. June 18th you will find Wilco playing at the Centennial Hall in Tucson. Tickets are $30-$40 and you can purchase them here.

In other Wilco news, don't forget that the new DVD Ashes of American Flags is out this Saturday(April 18th) just in time for Record Store Day.

Who's up for another road trip?

Monday Concert Calendar: Vivian Girls, Ariel Pink

After a very slow week of shows last week this week has a great lineup of musical acts visiting Phoenix. Be sure to check out SilverPlatter.info for a list of all shows and events taking place in Phoenix tonight.

Who: Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Vivian Girls, Hands on Fire
Where: Modified Arts
When: 8:00 Showtime
How Much: Tickets $10
Why: On the surface the two main bands playing tonight are very different in terms of musical style. The Brooklyn trio Vivian Girls are a blend of indie-pop-garage-punk that turn out short and sweet tracks. On the other hand, L.A.'s Ariel Pink is a one man band who plays all of his own instruments, with the exception of drums which he prefers to make all drum and percussion sounds with his mouth. Both Ariel Pink and the Vivian Girls have a great indie-pop sound, although Pink's is a bit more confusing but still equally as good.
Listen: Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti-"For Kate I Wait"
Vivian Girls-"Where Do You Run To?"

Venice is Sinking - "Ryan's Song"(mp3)

Athens, Georgia band Venice is Sinking have just released their second album AZAR. The first single from the album, "Ryan's Song", is wonderful track that has been on repeat all morning here in the office. Give a listen.

mp3:
Venice is Sinking-"Ryan's Song"

The album AZAR is available now from One Percent Press.

Just Announced: Santigold To Play Tucson

Our friends over at TucsonScene.com just announced that on June 20th Philadelphia's finest Santigold will be performing at Tucson's Rialto Theatre. Tickets are already on sale so get 'em while you can.

On a side note, I don't get this whole skipping Phoenix thing. Nothing against Tucson or anything but I just don't get it. First Animal Collective, then Grizzly Bear and now Santigold. WTF, guys? Gas isn't cheap, you know. Listen up popular recording artists who skip Phoenix because you guys are officially on notice.

mp3:
Santigold & Diplo-"Guns of Brooklyn"

Video: Franz Ferdinand Cover Brit Brits "Womanizer"

File this under "awesome making crap awesome".

Weekend Concert Calendar: Mirah, Vetiver, Richard Swift

richard swift [photo by: lance troxel]

It's been a pretty slow week in Phoenix but a couple of quality shows this weekend. Next week, however, is jam packed with shows going on in the Phoenix area. Be sure to check back next week for info on shows from Conor Oberst, Vivian Girls, Black Lips and more. Friday

Who: Mirah, Tender Forever, Snow Songs
Where: Modified Arts
When: 8:00 PM Showtime

Why: Portland native Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn is a staple of the pacific northwest music scene. Should be a great show.

Who: Dry River Yacht Club, Matthew Reveles, Yellow Minute
Where: Peace Tree House
When: 9:00 PM Showtime
Why: These are some of my favorite musical acts in Phoenix. I had a chance to see Matthew Reveles a few weeks ago and it was awesome.

Saturday

Who: Vetiver, Richard Swift, Monique Reagan
Where: Modified Arts
When: 8:30 PM Showtime
How Much: Tickets $10-$12
Why: Both Vetiver and Richard Swift have just released two fantastic albums. I've also been a long time fan of Richard Swift and his latest album The Atlantic Ocean is one of my favorites of the year so far.
Listen: Richard Swift-"Lady Luck"

Video: St. Vincent - "Actor Out Of Work"

The new St. Vincent video features St. Vincent in a large warehouse with several actors who are actually pretty good at fake crying. Way better than what I could have done. Although, not to toot my own horn, but I did pretty much rule in the high school play that I was in. Anyways, check out the video directed by Ian Kibbey and Corey Casey above.

The album Actor is out on 5/5 from 4AD.

Pink Mountaintops - "Vampire"(mp3)

Pink Mountaintops forthcoming album Outside Love is describe by its record label as "ten songs of love and hate that read like a Danielle Steele romance novel but that would probably make for bad television." That could just be my favorite description of an album so far this year. You can check out the first single from the forthcoming album "Vampire" down below.

mp3:
Pink Mountaintops-"Vampire"

The album Outside Love is available 5/5 from Jagjaguwar.

Papercuts - "You Can Have What You Want"(mp3)

We've already brought you one track from Papercuts' forthcoming album You Can Have What You Want, but why stop there? Check out the title track from the forthcoming album and enjoy!

Papercuts-"You Can Have What You Want"

The album You Can Have What You Want is available 4/14 on Gnomsong.

Dirty Projectors - "Stillness Is The Move"

The Dirty Projectors are giving away the first single from their forthcoming album Bitte Orca. The song "Stillness Is The Move" will be available for download in exchange for your e-mail address but that's a small price to pay for some free music. But you better act fast because the track is only available for download for a limited time.

"Stillness Is The Move" will also be available on 12" and mp3 form with new b-sides and some remixes on 5/5 from Domino.

Download: Dirty Projectors - "Stillness Is The Move"

Starfucker "Jupiter" a Review in 3 Parts

I fucking love Starfucker! I am not gonna lie, up until I saw them live last month at The Rhythm Room I hadn't even heard of them, but they blew me away then and when I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of Jupiter it's been on steady repeat ever since.

I don't want to go off on a bunch of hyperbole and stupid metaphors but I will give you a list of things that Jupiter will be awesome to listen to whilst doing:

1) Having sex
2) Driving
3) Driving and having sex
4) Farming
5) Woodworking
6) Push-up contests
7) Rollerskating
8) Firing someone
9) Painting a tribute mural of Tupac and Biggie under a freeway underpass

Now here is a list of things where it would not be very appropriate:

1) Skeet shooting
2) Waxing your surfboard
3) ...um that's it, those are the only two things I can think of and honestly you really could wax your surfboard to it if you wanted, but seriously DON'T listen to anything while you skeet shoot, that's just dangerous man.

Any band that can pull of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" with such panache and moxie is group of fellows that I just have to get behind. I highly suggest you do the same.

In closing if you are the type of person that likes to dance or likes to listen to music that was made for people that like to dance and have a good time by dancing and having fun you will be doing yourself a disservice by not purchasing Jupiter when it comes out on May 5th. I rest my case.

Check out Starfucker's Myspace for a little preview of Jupiter

Video: Peter Bjorn & John - "It Don't Move Me"

Peter Bjorn & John stopped by The Interface to play a couple of tracks from their latest album Living Things. Click here for more videos of PB&J on The Interface. Here is my favorite track off the new album, "It Don't Move Me".

New Wilco Preview from Ashes of American Flags

I am sure you already know that there is a new Wilco DVD coming out, April 28th called Ashes of American Flags. Now what you MAY not know is that there is a video of Side With Seeds floating around the internet...well actually its just on Brightcove and they don't have an embedded link so I think I speak for all of us when I say "Fuck You Very Much Brightcove" but I guess giving you the link to them is better than a kick in the balls so here you go.

Wilco: Side With Seeds from Ashes of American Flags DVD out 4/28

Stream The Merge Records Covers Compilation

Merge Records is twenty years old this year. And to celebrate this milestone they have released a compilation of some of their biggest hits as covered by some of today's biggest musical acts. Sound good? Well, wait there is more. Starting today they are streaming the album in its entirety over at their website. Awesome! Head on over and listen to awesome new tunes from Les Savy Fav, The Shins, St. Vincent, The National, Okkervil River and a whole lot more.

Video: Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele - "Howard"

As far as I'm concerned the ukulele is untapped resource in the indie rock community. Exhibit A: Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele. The Jackson, Mississippi native has gained some notoriety as of late thanks in large part to him recently touring with AC Newman and Animal Collective. The song "Howard" is from Dent May's debut album The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele which is available now on Paw Tracks.

Can't get enough Dent May? Check out his recent Daytrotter session.

Video: Man Man - "Rabbit Habits"

I'm convinced that any time you have Fred Armisen involved in anything you are doing it is bound to be a success. Throw in the absolutely adorable Charlyne Yi and you've got yourself a recipe for one awesome music video. This video for the song "Rabbit Habits" is one half old school werewolf movies and an ode to the classic 80's flick Teen Wolf. Enjoy!

The song "Rabbit Habits" is from the album Rabbit Habits which is available now on Anti Records.

The Veils - "The Letter" (mp3)

As I mentioned yesterday, this week has featured a number of quality new releases. One of those new releases that I am really enjoying is from the London based band The Veils. Their latest album, Sun Gang, is their third studio album from Rough Trade Records and is filled with some really great songs. The stand out track for me is the song "The Letter", which you can listen to below.

Video: ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - "Isis Unveiled"

From the album The Century of Self available now from Justice.

Video: Thermals - "Now We Can See"

From the Thermals latest album Now We Can See which is out today on Kill Rock Stars.

In related Thermals news, you can catch them playing at The Rhythm Room on May 26th. For more details on that show check out Stateside Presents.

Video: Hawnay Troof - "Underneath The Ocean"

In our tradition of bringing you the types of videos that give you nightmares about being eaten alive I present you with this new gem from Hawnay Troof. It REALLY is freaking me out and the song is the balls also, you know, if that shit matters to you.

Thanks Prefix!

Video: The Streets - "On The Edge Of A Cliff"

I was definitely of the opinion that The Streets last album, Everything Is Borrowed, was one of last years most underrated albums of the year. I don't think it was there best work ever but it was certainly better than the album The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living. Despite it's cool album title that is by far my least favorite Streets album. But, enough about that. Here is a new video for the song "On The Edge Of A Cliff". In the video we learn that Mike Skinner can grow a full beard in less than four minutes. Impressive.

The song "On The Edge Of A Cliff" is from the album Everything Is Borrowed which is available now on Vice Records.

Art Brut - "Weird Science"

After listening to this track I'm starting to sense a pattern developing on Art Brut's new album Art Brut vs. Satan. That pattern? Alcohol.

mp3:

The new album from Art Brut entitled Art Brut vs. Satan is out 4/21 on Downtown.

Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band-"Nikorette"(mp3)

Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band aren't due to release their latest album Outer South on 5/5. I know that may seem like a long time but luckily for us 'ol Bright Eyes has made a track from that album available as a free mp3 on his website. Thanks dude! Head on over to www.conoroberst.com to download and listen to the song "Nikorette". Or you could just listen to it here. Whatevs.

It's been quite a long time since Eminem's last album but in that time he hasn't seemed to changed much. This video and the song feel a lot like all of his old material, but to be honest I've always been a fan so I'm posting it.

New Music Tuesday: Bat For Lashes, Richard Swift, Micachu

It's Tuesday and that means new music.

I have got to say that this has got to be my favorite week for new releases so far this year. Even though there aren't a ton of big name releases there are a ton of solid new releases from the likes of Bat For Lashes, Richard Swift, Michachu, Crystal Antlers and more. If there is one week to head to the record store and pick up some great new music then this is definitely the week to do it.

Of all the new releases that are available this week we highly recommend you check out the debut album from Micachu. This is a low-fi, garage punk masterpiece of an album. I guarantee you'll be hearing a lot from Micachu this year.

Also, available this week is a DVD from Arcade Fire entitled Miroir Noir. The film follows Arcade Fire the making and touring of their 2007 classic Neon Bible.

Arcade Fire: Miroir Noir

Bat For Lashes: Two Suns

Beastie Boys: Check Your Head (Remastered Edition) [Explicit]

Crystal Antlers: Tentacles

Doves: Kingdom Of Rust

It Hugs Back: Inside Your Guitar

Junior Boys: Begone Dull Care

Lady Sovereign: Jigsaw

Micachu: Jewellery

Neil Young: Fork In The Road

Richard Swift: The Atlantic Ocean

The Thermals: Now We Can See

Various Artists: Score! 20 Years of Merge Records

The Veils: Sun Gangs

Video: Dead Man's Bones - "Name in Stone"

Actor Ryan Gosling joins the list of actors turned musicians with his musical side project Dead Man's Bones. The one major difference between Gosling and other actors who fancy themselves as musicians is that his stuff doesn't suck. In fact, I'm really digging this track. Check out this video for the song "Name in Stone".

Video: Silversun Pickups - "Panic Switch"

It's been a few years since Silversun Pickups' last album Carnavas but the California band are back with a new video and a new album as well. The song "Panic Switch" is the first single off of Silversun Pickups latest album Swoon which will be available 4/14 on Dangerbird Records.

Lewis and Clarke "Petrified Forest" | Me Likey (mp3)

Lewis and Clarke have a new 12" Vinyl EP coming out next week entitled Light Time (order here) and have been kind enough to provide us with this super chilled out track from the very same EP. It's called "Petrified Forrest" and I am guessing that's because when you listen to it you don't want to move for fear that you will miss something. It's just like when you hid in your older brothers closet when he was having his way with himself, but for different reasons of coarse.

Lewis and Clarke are also opening up for of few of the Bat for Lashes shows, check the dates below and please oh please listen to the song please.

Monday Concert Calendar

Yikes! Normally this is where we would tell you about all the great shows happening tonight in Phoenix but the truth is there is not much going on this week. So, stay home and watch some college basketball or if that's not your thing you can watch House and or 24.

Kid Cudi feat. Kanye West, Common, Lady Gaga - "I Poke Her Face"

I heard the song "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga on the radio the other day and thought it was the worst song ever. Leave it to Yeezy to take something awful and turn it into something awesome. Turn your headphones up for this one, this track is sick.

Akron/Family - "River" (mp3)

Check out the latest track from Pennsylvania group Akron/Family for their song "River". The song is from their forthcoming album Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free which will be available 5/5 from Dead Oceans.

Weekend Concert Calendar: Bonnie Prince Billy, Calexico, Leonard Cohen

Friday

Who: Bonnie Prince Billy, White Magic

Why: There is a good reason this show is sold out. Bonnie Prince Billy's new album Beware is the seventh album recorded by Will Oldham under the moniker Bonnie Prince Billy and continues the tradition of excellence that previous Bonnie Prince Billy albums have had. From what I hear the band touring with Oldham is super tight and should make for a great show.

Who: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

When: 8:00 PM Showtime
Why: It's Bruce Springsteen, what other reason do you need to go see this show?

Saturday

Who: Calexico, Sergio Mendoza y La Orkesta, Salvador Duran
Where: Heritage Square(7th Street and Washington)
How Much: Tickets $20
When: 8:00 PM Showtime
Why: Tucson legends Calexico are coming to town for their first headlining set since 2006 in support of their album Carried To Dust. Should be a great show.

Who: Dry River Yacht Club
Where: Stinkweeds
How Much: Free Show
When: 3:00 PM Showtime
Event details Dry River Yacht Club.
Why: If you haven't had a chance to see Dry River Yacht Club yet then head down to Stinkweeds this Saturday for a free show. Free show + good music = no reason not to miss a great show.

Sunday

Who: Leonard Cohen
Where: Dodge Theatre
How Much: $82.50 - $250
When: 3:00 PM Showtime
Why: This is Leonard Cohen's first American tour in 15 years. This is one show that should not be missed.

When: 3:00 PM Showtime
Why: Any time you get a chance to see Lou Reed and help out a good cause while doing it is more than enough reason to go see this show.

Video: The Ropes - "Be My Gun"

I got a nice surprise in my inbox last night when someone e-mailed me this video from the New York duo The Ropes. The Ropes just released an EP featuring the above song, "Be My Gun". Thanks to Natalie for the heads up.

The Be My Gun EP is available now on SINLO Records.

Video: Micachu & The Shapes - "Lips"

Micachu & The Shapes just may be my favorite new band of 2009. The London based group just recently signed with Rough Trade Records and have already released their debut album Jewellery in the UK. The album has become a favorite of just about every music blog out there and has even gotten a favorable tweet from Grizzly Bear's Ed Droste.

The album Jewellery is available 4/7 in the US on Rough Trade Records.

Video: Crystal Antlers - "Andrew"

The song "Andrew" is from Crystal Antlers' album Tentacles which is available now on Touch and Go Records.

Video: Rainbow Arabia - "Omar K"

This shit is going to give me nightmares.

The Strange Boys: Heard You Wanna Beat Me Up

Video: Company of Thieves - "Oscar Wilde"

If you're going to pick a movie to recreate in your music video then you can't go wrong with a Wes Anderson movie. In this case Chicago's own Company of Thieves choose to go with Rushmore, which is high on my list of favorite movies. In addition to the sweet visuals the song, "Oscar Wilde" is also a very cool track.

The song "Oscar Wilde" is from the album Ordinary Riches which is available now on Wind Up.
