Tonight In The Valley: Shearwater | Mr Gnome with Dearspeak and Soft Drink | Cypress Hill

There is a show for you tonight no matter WHAT you like. I am going to see Shearwater at The Rhythm Room because I am a civilized adult, but you could go to Cypress Hill at Martini Ranch or Bitch at The Trunk Space or Mr. Gnome with Dearspeak and Soft Drink at Yucca or High on Fire at my favorite "over-crowded sauna" The Clubhouse!

That's just a lot of things to choose from so choose wisely ;-)

February's 5 Best Albums

In all honesty this list could have been way longer but we narrowed it down to 5 this month. I have listened to Odd Blood and Have One On Me about a millions times. Well I have listened to Have One On Me like 3 times but that about equates to a million times of any other album. Any other choices you think we left off? Leave some freaking comments!!! Argghh See the list after the break...

New Music Tuesday: Joanna Newsom, Xiu Xiu, Shearwater, Phantogram & Past Lives

Damn fine day to be a person that enjoys new music. Corncopia of albums I doubt you even have enough money to buy they all. I am not saying you are poor, just frugal. If you were only able to buy like 3 or 4 (because of alleged money problems) I would recommend Joanna Newsom's TRIPLE album Have One On Me, Xiu Xiu's Dear God, I Hate Myself, Shearwater's The Golden Archipelago, and Phantogram's Eyelid Movies. Now you are obviously an adult or at least a savvy enough child to be reading such a high class music blog so by all means click on some of the other albums below (after break) and check their sounds out on Amazons thoughtfully provided 30 second clips, and make some decisions for yourself for once in your life. Video: Shearwater - "Hidden Lakes"

Check out the video for "Hidden Lakes" from Shearwater. The track comes off of the bands latest album Golden Archipelago which is out next Tuesday (Feb. 23rd) on Matador. I'd try and explain to you what's going on in this video, but, frankly, I have no clue. I think the one guy took the other guys dog or something. I don't know. Just press play and close your eyes.

Stream Shearwater's 'The Golden Archipelago' Over At NPR

Personally, I've always favored Shearwater frontman Jonathan Meiburg's other band, Okkervil River, to Shearwater.  I probably always will.  But that doesn't mean that Shearwater isn't any good, quite the opposite actually.  I'm actually quite enjoying Shearwater's latest album Golden Archipelago.  We're still a few weeks from the albums February 23rd release date on Matador but you can stream the album in full over at NPR.

mp3: Shearwater - "Castaways"

Can you guys believe it's already December?  Personally, I couldn't be happier that a new year is almost upon us.  December is typically a month without any new music releases of note and endless amounts of inane best of lists.  But I am so completely sick of everything I've been listening to for the past year that I'm already really looking forward to some of next years new albums that have already been announced.  You can go ahead and add the latest release from Shearwater to the list.  The album The Golden Archipelago is the Austin band's third album and if they are anything like the previous two should be pretty awesome.  The album is due out February 23rd from Matador.  You can take a listen to the first mp3 from the album, "Castaways", down below.
