St. Vincent At The Orpheum 3/18/2014

I went to see St. Vincent at The Orpheum on Tuesday. I took my point and shoot Ricoh GR figuring I would be able to pass it off as cell phone camera and not get yelled at. Guess what, I totally got yelled at. BUT I was able to get a few descent shots for a point and shoot. Sitting in the second row does have it advantages.

St. Vincent "Cruel"

If this doesn't make you excited for St. Vincent's new album in a few weeks and tour stop in Phoenix on Oct 20th, then you are probably dead inside and also probably don't like St. Vincent. You are entitled to your own opinion but you are also dead to me. On the other hand I guess there is the slight possibility that you were already at your maximum care giving levels already, in that case I apologize about the being dead to me comments.... 1000 pardons.

Here Comes Crescent Ballroom!

It has been a long time coming and something that I have been dreaming and wishing for since we started this site in 2008.  A truly bad ass music venue downtown! Sure Modified had it charms, but good sound, not smelling like shit and AC were not those charms, and the Trunk Space... let's just not talk about the Trunk Space.

But news is hitting that the best and most wonderful Stateside Presents are finally fulfilling their destiny and opening up a venue of their very own. It's called Crescent Ballroom and even though we have seen the name pop up as the site for upcoming shows like St Vincent, tUne-YaRdS, M83 & We Were Promised Jetpacks we didn't really know any details. Now we know more details and those details are good. It's going to be size wise in between The Rhythm Room and Marquee Theatre, have food and drinks and be open everyday at 4pm to hang out, or something to that effect.

It looks like the first show is Unknown Mortal Orchestra with What Laura Says opening on Oct 4th. I am going to bet that it sells out, so I would get your tickets now, or whenever they become available because their site is not working yet I guess.

The show was great, St. Vincent was amazing (Mike already wrote a review that you can check out Mike's HERE) but I was really impressed by Wildbirds & Peacedrums. It's really something to when you can make a whole band out of just vocals and percussion, who says you need any stupid guitars? Whole slew of pictures and videos after the break. Tonight In Phoenix: St. Vincent with Wildbirds & Peacedrums

I kinda feel weird dedicating a whole post to a show that is sold out. But I guess this is mostly to make the people that don't have tickets feel bad about themselves for being procrastinators. I guess it's also a chance for people that DO have tickets to gloat and point their snobby fingers at everybody else. That is what EM is all about, bringing people together.

Video: St. Vincent - "Laughing With a Mouth Full of Blood"

One of my favorite artists, St. Vincent aka Annie Clark, recently teamed up with SNL cast member Fred Armisen and former Sleater-Kinney member Carrie Brownstein to film her latest video for the track "Laughing With a Mouth Full of Blood." The video is awesome and Annie Clark is really funny. The video makes me even more excited to see St. Vincent when she performs at the Rhythm Room next Thursday(Feb. 11th). If you think this video is funny you should also check out Armisen and Brownstein's website THUNDERANT where they regularly post funny videos.

Everybody Is Covering Everybody

It seems as if the hip trend at the moment is cover songs. In fact, the other day Shawn and I were joking around that our favorite songs of the year so far were all Animal Collective covers. In truth, we were only half joking. One really good cover of a Animal Collective song comes from Norwegian artist Sondre Lerche who covered "Bluish" which you can check out here.

Cover songs are so popular that even Peter Gabriel is getting in on the act. Not that this is exactly new territory for Peter Gabriel. He did a fairly memorable cover of Vampire Weekend's "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" a few years back. Which was pretty fitting actually considering Vampire Weekend drops his name a couple of times in the song. Gabriel must have had such a good time covering Vampire Weekend that we can expect to see a whole album of covers to be released on February 15th. Other indie artists that Peter Gabriel will be covering include Arcade Fire, The Magnetic Fields, and Bon Iver.

You can listen to Peter Gabriel cover Bon Iver's "Flume" over at Stereogum here. Personally, I'm not a big fan of his take on the song. Part of what makes Justin Vernon's songs so great is his heart-breaking falsetto. Fortunately, Gabriel's cover of "My Body Is A Cage" by Arcade Fire isn't bad.

Speaking of Justin Vernon, he teamed up with Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, at a concert recently where they performed some covers of Neil Young's "Harvest Moon" and Dolly Parton's "Jolene." You can take a listen to both over at Pitchfork.

Another cover that St. Vincent recently did that managed to make its way on the internet is her version of The National's "Mistaken For Strangers." I absolutely love her take on this song. I'm really hoping she'll be performing this one when she plays the Rhythm Room on February 11th. Take a listen up above and drop a comment with what you think.

St. Vincent Playing Rhythm Room This February

Today started out particularly crappy.  Lucky for me the day instantly turned around when I found out that those awesome dudes over at Stateside just announced St. Vincent will be returning to Phoenix this February for a show at the Rhythm Room.  Shawn and I were both at St. Vincent's show this past May at Modified Arts and it was absolutely fantastic. 

Tickets are already on sale here for a reasonably priced $15.  Our tickets have already been purchased and if you're planning on seeing this show I suggest you get yours quick.  Her last show at Modified sold out fast and man was that place packed.   

No word yet on who is opening the show, but if I had to guess I'm sure it'll be someone awesome. 

Stream: Bon Iver + St Vincent - "Roslyn"

When I first heard that my two favorite musicians, Bon Iver and St. Vincent, we're teaming up to collaborate on a song I had a veritable joygasm. When I saw that the two were collaborating on a song for the soundtrack for the new Twilight movie I had a bit of a hipster-crisis. Can I or should I like something that is associated with Twilight. Truth be told, I'm the least hip person in the world, so this really should be a non issue, but even so Twilight is such awful tween drivel that I wondered why this couldn't be for a new Spike Jonze or Wes Anderson movie instead. But, if Justin Vernon and Annie Clark with it then so am I.

Thanks to the New Moon soundtrack being leaked to the internet you and I can both enjoy the song "Roslyn" from Bon Iver and St. Vincent. I honestly love this track. Clark and Vernon can both do no wrong in my book.

St. Vincent playing this Saturday(5/31) at Modified Arts was without a doubt the best musical performance I've seen so far this year. She played a great mixture of tunes from her latest album Actor, as well as some of my favorties from Marry Me. I was also equally impressed by the opening band Pattern is Movement, who performed one of the best covers of Beyonce's "Crazy In Love" I've ever heard. St. Vincent's follow up to her 2007 album Marry Me is without a doubt my most eagerly anticipated album of the year. We've already brought you a couple of tracks from the new album Actor and now you've got a chance to listen to the album in its entirety over at NPR. The new St. Vincent video features St. Vincent in a large warehouse with several actors who are actually pretty good at fake crying. Way better than what I could have done. Although, not to toot my own horn, but I did pretty much rule in the high school play that I was in. Anyways, check out the video directed by Ian Kibbey and Corey Casey above.

We've been eagerly awaiting the release of the new St. Vincent album ever since it was announced a month or two ago. And while the release date is just around the corner I can hold myself over with this video of St. Vincent performing her song "Actor Out of Work". The clip is taken from St. Vicent and her band rehearsing for a performance for NPR. The audio in this clip isn't as clean as I'd like it to be, but I'll take what ever new material from St. Vincent I can get.

St. Vincent Playing Phoenix 5/31

St. Vincent's new album Actor is one of my most anticipated albums of the year. We brought you the first single from the album, "The Strangers", last week and today we're happy to let you guys know that St. Vincent will be playing Modified Arts on 5/31. Tickets for the show will go on sale Saturday, March 21st and can be purchased at Zia Records, Stinkweeds, Hoodlums and online here. Definitely mark you calendars for that show.
