Video: Dan Auerbach "Heartbroken, In Disrepair"
Some people that I know that also write for this blog might not think that this song is a very good choice for a video. But those people have never listened to this song cruising down the freeway at night high an mescaline before, so those people should really just not judge people that love this song for that reason. If you need me I will be at the bar with Dan Auerbach and Sam Jackson
Listen to New Mars Volta Song (Cheaters Guide)
So Mars Volta as much as I love them have made a retarded website to promote their new album Octahedron coming out on June 23rd. You have to click all around the painting to find little "easter eggs" of content. Where other less helpful blogs might tell you to just click around till you find it we here at ElectricMustache know you are busy and don't want to fuck around with that bullshit so just click on the star on top of the big crystal thing on the right and you can hear the song...all the other stars are the other content...your welcome. Fortunatly the song is pretty bad ass so go for it man!intotheoctahedron.com
Weekend Concert Calendar: St. Vincent, Lucinda Williams, Erykah Badu

There are a ton of great shows happening this weekend in Phoenix. Out of everything going on this weekend I have to admit that I am most excited to see St. Vincent this Sunday at Modified Arts. I've been a long time fan of St. Vincent aka Annie Clark starting with her debut solo album Marry Me and her just released sophomore album Actor is high on my list of favorites of the year.
Also of interest this weekend is Lucinda Williams, recently hailed as "America's Best Songwriter" by Time Magazine, will be performing at Mesa Arts Center on Saturday. Another long time favorite of mine Erykah Badu performs at Celebrity Theatre.

Listen To 'Dark Was The Night' From Radio City Music Hall
Personally, I love the album and would definitely include it in my favorites of the year.
Back on May 3rd several of the artists who contributed to the album gathered for an all-star concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Unfortunately, we weren't able to attend. Sure, we were bummed but lucky for us NPR is streaming the concert over at their website. Definitely worth a listen.
Listen: Dark Was The Night @ Radio City Music Hall

Kid Cudi will be on tour this summer with Asher Roth and will make a stop in Tempe when they play Marquee Theatre. No word yet as to when tickets will be on sale for the show but tickets will be priced at $32. Lets just hope Kid Cudi has a better time this time than the last time he was in town.
Video: Courtney Marie Andrews - "Right in Time"
Local favorite Courtney Marie Andrews recently performed a cover of the Lucinda Williams song "Right in Time" for the Phoenix New Times web series The Sun Sessions. The appropriately timed cover comes just as Lucinda Williams herself plays a show this Saturday at the Mesa Arts Center.
Courtney Marie Andrews is playing on June 18th at Modified Arts for the Summer Folk Festival and then departs for a west coast tour. She'll be back at Modified Arts on July 31st, though, for the release of her sophomore album Painter's Hands and a Seventh Son.

Video: Kanye West ft. Mr Hudson - Paranoid (Starring Rihanna)
I was just posting this video and then it done got taken down n' shit...The one I WAS posting was way better quality...all HD n' shit. But hey! It's the internet not an IMAX right? Am I right? All videos regardless of who is singing should all have Rihanna not singing. Just sayin.
You better watch this shit before it get's taken down.

Handsome Furs - "Radio Kaliningrad"
Speaking of the Handsome Furs, you can catch the band when they play Chryo Arts in Scottsdale on June 12th.
Listen To This: Coats and Villa

In an effort to bring you the best local music around we spend a lot of time on Myspace looking for new and good music. To be honest, this isn't always a lot of fun. There are some really good bands that come from Phoenix, but there are also a lot of really bad ones, too. But every once in a while we come across a band that makes the effort worthwhile.
Wayne Coats and Nicholas Villa make up the band Coats and Villa and have recently completed work on their debut album Make A Record. The album was just released back in April via Mazlin Art Entertainment and is available for purchase on iTunes. Take a listen to two tracks from the new album, "Everybody Wants You" and "Runaway".
Coats and Villa - "Everybody Wants You"
Coats and Villa - "Runaway"
To hear more check out the bands website to stream the album, Make A Record, in full.
Video: The National "The Runaway"
Here be a new The National song live recorded in a place that enables the ability to capture the sound a band plays out of their instruments.
We are pretty excited about anything new out of The National camp since considering how long it's been since Boxer came out, "So Far Around the Bend" is absolutely on my top ten of 2009 list but I fear that is has not satisfied my appetite...this new song might quell my hunger for a little while. They closest they are coming to our neck of the woods is San Fran when the play the Outside Lands Festival on Aug 29th

Beastie Boys Name New Album...rip me off?
Soooo...My friend Matt (who is in prison) and I have had this running joke for the last 10 years, it goes something like this "Hey, do you guys wanna have a hot sauce party? Just kiddin...to spicy for me!" It't one of those inside jokes that is only funny when you get "the voice" that goes with it. All this is pretty unimportant except for the fact that the Beastie Boys TOTALLY ripped us off for the name of their new album called Hot Sauce Committee I realize that it's not the exact same thing but I am sure they didn't want to get sued by a guy running a very powerful blog and a guy in prison (would you?). I have my eye on you Beastie Boys!!! Watch your asses!

Haymarket Squares Featured on Focus On
Phoenix's premiere punk-grass trio The Haymarket Squares were recently featured on the web series Focus On. The band talks a little about their unique musical styling and plans for the future. The band is heading into the studio to record some tunes and have some new merch on the way. Personally, I'm looking forward to those Haymarket Square adult diapers.
Check out the band live on June 7th when they play The Rogue, and in the meantime check out the band's Myspace page to listen to some of the bands music.
New Music Tuesday: Grizzly Bear, Phoenix, Sharon Van Etten
It should come as no surprise that our most recommended album of the week is the latest album from Grizzly Bear called Veckatimest. We've been patiently waiting for this one for some time now and now it's finally here. I've only been listening to it for an hour or so now but I already love this album. From the very first track on the album, "Southern Point", you pretty much know you're going to love this album. But don't take our word for it, Pitchfork gave the album a 9.0 in their review and just about every music blog I've visited today have been unanimous in their praises for this album. To make things even better you can pick up the album for only $3.99 if you purchase the mp3 album from Amazon.com.
Veckatimest isn't the only the new release we're looking forward to today. Also out is Phoenix's latest album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. I also highly recommend you check out the new album Because I Was In Love from Sharon Van Etten.
Bachelorette: My Electric Family
Black Moth Super Rainbow: Eating Us
The Brian Jonestown Massacre: Smoking Acid EP
Grizzly Bear: Veckatimest
A Hawk and a Hacksaw: Deliverance
Phoenix: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Sharon Van Etten: Because I Was in Love
Viva Voce: Rose City
War Tapes: The Continental Divide
RIP Jay Bennett
Jay Bennett was found dead Sunday morning and THIS is what the news has to say about:Former Wilco member Jay Bennett died at the age of 45. The guitarist and songwriter, passed away early Sunday morning in downstate Urbana, where the musician was running a recording studio.
"Early this morning, Jay died in his sleep and an autopsy is being performed. The family is in mourning and is unavailable for comment at this time," said Edward Burch, friend and musician who collaborated with Bennett.
Bennett founded the power-pop band Titanic Love Affair before joining Wilco, where he contributed to three of the band's albums, including 2002's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot."
Due to tensions between frontman Jeff Tweedy, as documented in the film "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," and Bennett later left the band.
Bennett was working on a fifth solo album, "Kicking at the Perfurmed Air."
Anybody that has seen the documentary "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," probably thinks Jay Bennett was a douche bag but I have always gotten the impression that he got the bad end of the editing stick and he wasn't as bad as they made him out to be. I was in a band for a few years and I can tell you that tensions run pretty hot whilst recording an album so to kick a guy out after contributing so much to what is considered the BEST Wilco album of them all is kinda effed up if you ask me.
Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis
As our Memorial Day gift to you, please enjoy this latest episode of Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis as he welcomes actor Brad Lee Cooper to the show.
P.S. If you haven't seen the previews from the new movie The Hangover, staring both Cooper and Galifianakis then click on this link to check it out. It looks hilarious.
Video: Grizzly Bear - "Two Weeks"
We're pretty late to the party with this video from Grizzly Bear for their song "Two Weeks", but it's my first day back from a much needed vacation, so give me a break already. Not sure I can accurately describe the video, you're just going to have to watch it for yourself. The video was directed by Patrick Daughters, one of the last great music video directors out there.
In other Grizzly Bear news, today(5/26) is finally the day that their latest album Veckatimest is available. I've been waiting for this one for a while and am I happy to write that I'm currently listening to it now. You can listen to the album in full on the Grizzly Bear's Myspace page if you want to try it before you buy it. But, take my word for it, this is one of the best albums of the year and my favorite Grizzly Bear album yet.

Video: Grizzly Bear Black Cab Session
I know that everybody in the Phoenix/Tuscon area are super jazzed about the upcoming Wilco/Grizzly Bear show in Tucson June 18th that is ONLY happening once on their respective tours, but that's like a whole month away so to tide you over the awesome folks over at the Black Cab Sessions just released their video of All We Ask. What I want to ask is, how bad does it stink in the back of that cab after 79 dirty indie bands have smashed themselves in there?

Breakfast at Sulimays 21
This is seriously the best the internet will have to offer for many years to come. It has the type of honesty you don't get from people that give a shit and that is best thing about old people...they don't give any shits and that is great. If you have not seen any other Breakfast at Sulimays there is a dark dark place in hell reserved for you (if you believe in those types of shenanigans) so you best hedge your bets and check out those old beauties by clicking HERE, oh and notice how their review of Bromst is so much better than OURS...see that was really boring huh?
Mucho Gracias Stereogum (Why won't you return our calls? We miss you?) TTFN!

Preview: War Tapes New Album

If you are the type of person that likes the finer things in life, things like Cuban cigars, multi-cultured adopted children, Arabian Stallions and imported sparkling water then LA band War Tapes are the kind of thing you can really get behind. If I was a classifier of genres I would say they are "Power Indie Pop" that reminds me of a cross between UK band White Lies with Julian Casablancas on vocals. I would suggest listening to War Tapes will driving to work in the morning or whilst getting ready for a night out on the town. They are a band best served through speakers as opposed to headphones and should be applied liberally but you might want to test them on a piece of unnoticeable fabric to make sure they don't stain.
I have some good news for you, if all of my ramblings have piqued your interest in the War Tapes and you want to hear the WHOLE album before it comes out next Tuesday (5/26/09) all you have to do is click HERE but you should do it quickly because I am not sure how much longer it's going to be up you see. After you hear the album I am certain you will have every intention of purchasing the album and you can do so by clicking HERE OH and one more thing if you happen to live in the LA area they are having a free CD release party next Wed at Club Moscow, check out the details HERE I will let you get back to your life now...good day.

Who: Margot & the Nuclear So and So's with Telekinesis and Everything Now
Where: Rhythm Room
When: 8:00 PM
Cost: $10-$12
Why: Indiana band Margot & the Nuclear So and So's hit up the Rhythm Room tonight. Opening the show is Telekinesis and Everything Now.

Tuesday Concert Calendar: Flight of the Conchords, Kings of Leon, The Walkmen

Who: Flight of the Conchords
Where: Dodge Theatre
When: 7:00 PM
Cost: $35.50
Why: A few years back a friend of mine introduced me to Flight of the Conchords by playing me a song that was on the bands Myspace page. That song was "Albi The Racist Dragon" and I was immediately hooked on the New Zealand folk-comedy duo. Several years later FOTC have one of the funniest shows on HBO and they're playing tonight at Dodge Theatre. If your a fan of the show then you probably know what to expect tonight but if not, take my word for it and go see this show.
Who: Kings of Leon, The Walkmen
Where: Mesa Amphitheatre
When: 7:00 PM
Cost: Sold Out
Why: I, like a lot of Kings of Leon fans, were let down by Kings of Leon's latest album Only by the Night. Phoenix New Times blogger Michael Lopez wrote a great article last week that pretty much nails the dissapoinment felt by long time fans. Don't get me wrong, I think the bands success is well earned, it's just too bad it couldn't have been for one of their better albums. Even still, I'd love to see this show just in the hopes that the band will play some of their older tunes. The show is also worth the price of admission just to see opening band The Walkmen, whose 2008 album You & Me was one of my favorite albums of the year.
New Music Tuesday: John Vanderslice, Iron and Wine, Passion Pit
After a slow week last week there are a ton of quality albums that you can pick up today. I'm very excited to pick up the latest album from John Vanderslice, whose album Romanian Names is available today. We've brought you a couple of tracks from Vanderslice's latest effort, both of which I really enjoyed.Another release that we've been following here on the blog is the musical collection from Iron and Wine called Around The Well. This two disc collection features unreleased material and rarities from the band.
Other albums I'm excited to hear include Jason Lytle's Yours Truly, The Commuter, Au Revoir Simone's Still Night, Still Light, and White Rabbits' It's Frightening.
Our deal of the day comes way of Passion Pit, whose new album Manners is available today and can be picked up for just $2.99 if you buy the mp3 album. I listened to the album last week on the bands Myspace page and that is a steal considering how good that album is.
Tori Amos: Abnormally Attracted to Sin
Au Revoir Simone: Still Night, Still Light
Bjork: Voltaic (Limited Edition) (2CD/2DVD)
British Sea Power: Man of Aran (CD + DVD)
cKy: Carver City (Special Edition)

Iron and Wine: Around the Well
Jarvis Cocker: Further Complications
Jason Lytle: Yours Truly, The Commuter
Jeffrey Lewis: Em Are I
John Vanderslice: Romanian Names
Method Man and Redman: Blackout 2
Passion Pit: Manners
White Rabbits: It's Frightening

Video: Deerhoof "This is God Speaking"
Deerhoof have never been the most "mainstream" of bands but this song as cool as it is, falls more into the category of "Things you hear on your way to hell" and the video only makes it
worse. I think I will be losing at least 6 hours of sleep over the next couple of days. But please do watch it, just so you say you did.
Video: Modest Mouse - "Satellite Skin"
Modest Mouse had originally planned on releasing a new limited-edition 7" for this past Record Store Day but it didn't make it into stores on time, so instead we'll see a release on May 26th.
One of the songs on the upcoming single is "Satellite Skin" and its video was just released on Friday. The video was directed by Kevin Willis, who also worked on the Tool video "Stinkfist". That certainly explains a lot.
Foreign Born - "Early Warning"

Foreign Born is offering up another new mp3 from their forthcoming album Person to Person. The new single "Early Warning" has a very cool African guitar sound to it. Check it out below.
Foreign Born - "Early Warning"
The album Person to Person is available 6/23 via Secretly Canadian.

Album Review: The Silent Years - Let Go EP
I don't normally do album reviews. Sure, I'll throw in my two cents on whether I like something or not but I always include an mp3 or music video for you to decide whether or not you like it.Well, this past Monday when I was writing the preview for Monday's concerts I wrote that after hearing a few tracks on The Silent Years' Myspace page I purchased their 2008 album The Globe. Apparently, someone at their record label saw that and sent me an e-mail that included their new EP Let Go and asked if I would like to do a review. I figured that if this guy was gracious enough to send me some free music the least I could do would be to review it.
I really enjoyed listening to the new EP from The Silent Years. From the opening track "Taking Drugs At The Amusement Park" you realize two things about the band. First off, lead vocalist Josh Epstein has an amazing voice and secondly you realize this band knows how to name their songs(my favorite song title has to be "TV>BJ"). But funny song titles aside it really is the music that makes this an enjoyable listen.
My favorite track on the album "Madame Shocking" shows off Epstein's great voice and has wonderful instrumentation. Take a listen below.
The Silent Years - "Madame Shocking"
You can buy the new EP digitally through Amazon or iTunes and you can buy the phsyical version of the album on July 14th from SideCho Records.
Video: Telekinesis - "Awkward Kisser"
Here is a cool new video from Seattle's own Telekinesis for their song "Awkward Kisser". The song comes from Telekinesis' self-titled debut album which was produced by Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla. The album is available now on Merge Records.
You can catch Telekinesis when they play the Rhythm Room on May 20th.

Video: Emily Wells - "Juicy" (Notorious BIG cover)
In keeping with today's theme of "slow news day/too busy at work" here is a video of Emily Wells covering Biggie's "Juicy" at SXSW earlier this year courtesy of The Tape is Not Sticky and of coarse famous youtuber Mashfest Please enjoy responsibly.
Bonus mp3 of the recorded version!

Thursday Concert Calendar: Tremulants, Boys and Frogs

Sorry the concert calendar is up later than normal but I'm having a total Lost hangover today. Be sure to check out SilverPlatter.info for a full list of today's shows and events.
Here is what is happening in Phoenix tonight:
Who: Jimmy Buffet
Where: Cricket Pavillion
When: 8:00 PM
Cost: $36-$136
Why: This wouldn't be my first choice for a concert to go to tonight (that's below) but there is just no denying that Jimmy Buffet makes some very fun songs to sing a long to. Who hasn't found themselves singing a long with "Margaritaville" on more than one occasion? I know I have.
Who: Tremulants, Boys and Frogs, Arbor Day Jones
Where: The Rogue Bar
When: 9:00 PM
Cost: $4
Why: We've become pretty big fans of local group Boys and Frogs and we hope you've had a chance to check them out as well. If not this will be your last opportunity for a while as their lead singer will be riding his bike from here to Michigan for charity and they won't have another gig for a while.
Video: Little Joy - "Next Time Around"
Seeing this video for the song "Next Time Around" from the band Little Joy makes me want to do two things: go back and listen to their brilliant 2008 self titled album and get down to Brazil for a fun filled road trip with my band. Seeing as how I don't have a band I can at least cross the first part off of my to do list.
Little Joy's self titled debut album is available now on Rough Trade.
mp3: Sharon Van Etten "For You"

This song is good song from Sharon Van Etten and you should listen to it with your ears but the whole time you are listening to it with your ears look at the picture of her in the tub and KNOW she is clean!
Sharon Van Etten - "For You"
Oak Ridge Boys Cover The White Stripes?
The summer after graduating High School I worked at a furniture store called "Oakridge Furniture" and the owners referred to all the employees as "Oak Ridge Boys" god I hated that place...To this day it's the only place I have been fired from, can you guess why I was fired? No, fine...it was for saying "bad words" at a customers house whilst delivering furniture, I am pretty sure it was when I smashed my hand in a doorway after carrying a heavy ass sleeper sofa through the snow. I DARE you to do that and not say "crap!" I double dog dare you. Anyway I don't know why they covered this song but they did and I posted it because it's a really slow news day, and old man beards are cool? Right?
via Idolator
mp3: New Mr. Hudson? Featuring Kanye
I have absolutely NO idea who this guy is but I am guessing he likes Fish Mr Hudson Ft Kanye- "Supernova"

Courtney Marie Andrews Announces New Album

One of my favorite local musicians, Courtney Marie Andrews, just announced on her MySpace blog that she has a new album on the way. Andrews, who is currently signed to the River Jones Music label will release her second album Painters Hand and a Seventh Son on July 31st.
One of the songs featured on the new album, "Red Handed Aesthetic Attractions", was recently included on the Phoenix: We Love It compilation and was my hands down favorite track on the album. Take a listen below:
Courtney Marie Andrews - "Red Handed Aesthetic Attractions"
Courtney Marie Andrews is currently preparing for a west coast tour but will be playing in town on June 18th at Modified Arts.
Wednesday Concert Calendar: Boys and Frogs, Saddles, Scott Weiland

A couple of interesting shows tonight in Phoenix. As always be sure to check out SilverPlatter.info for a full list of concerts and events taking place tonight.
Who: Scott Weiland
Where: Marquee Theatre
When: 6:30 PM
Cost: $30
Why: Scott Weiland has become a lot more well known for his troubled personal life than his musical achievements. His latest album, Happy In Galoshes, has gotten mediocre reviews and any time I've ever read a concert review where Weiland has performed it has been reported to be kind of a train wreck. Which is pretty much the reason why I'm recommending this show. Personally, I'm not a big fan of Weiland's solo material, but maybe you'll get lucky and he'll play some Stone Temple Pilots songs. If not then it will probably be another huge train wreck. And who doesn't enjoy watching a good train wreck?
What: Awsomefest featuring Saddles and Boys and Frogs
Where: Modified Arts
When: 6:00 PM
Cost: $5
Why: The lineup for this show has me scratching my head in confusion. The acts peforming at this show range from latin hip-hop (Ese Cali) to death metal (Giants Among Us, The Baby Lottery) to indie (Saddles, Boys and Frogs). I'm all for variety but I'm not so sure how well these various styles of music mix. At least it should make for an interesting crowd. I do recommend that you go check out Saddles and Boys and Frogs, both of whom we've mentioned on the blog before and are big fans of.
Stream Wilco (The Album) In Full

We still have a ways yet to go until the new album from Wilco is available to purchase. The album, simply titled Wilco (The Album), doesn't come out until June 30th but for those of you jonesing for those sweet sweet sounds from Jeff Tweedy and company we've got some good news for you. Head on over to Wilco's website and you can stream in its entirety Wilco (The Album).
I've only had a chance to listen to a few songs since the album has been available for streaming, but so far the standout track - for me anyways - is "One Wing". What about you guys? We'd love to hear what your favorite track from the new album is.
Don't forget you can catch what is sure to be the concert of the year when Wilco and Grizzly Bear play Centennial Hall in Tuson June 18th. I believe there may still be some tickets available.

Cinematic Titanic
Although not exactly music related, if you're looking for something very cool to do this Friday I'd recommend you head down to Hoodlums to meet the gang from Cinematic Titanic. Cinematic Titanic is basically the same concept as Mystery Science Theatre 3000, which makes a lot of sense considering Cinematic Titanic was created by MST3K creator Joel Hodgeson and features the original cast of MST3K.
I use to watch MST3K religiously back when it was on television and was super bummed when I found out that the show was being canceled. Fortunately the concept has lived on through a couple of different incarnations. Former MST3K cast member Mike Nelson has a similar project called RiffTrax. RiffTrax strays a little bit away from the original concept of MST3K by riffing on more well known movies like Lord Of The Rings and Star Wars where as Cinematic Titanic sticks with the lesser known b-movies.
The gang from Cinematic Titanic will have a live show this Friday at Mesa Arts Center. Check out the very funny clip from Cinematic Titanic riffing on the awesomely bad looking Legacy Of Blood up above.
Bowerbirds - "Northern Lights"
Check out this great new song from the band Bowerbirds called "Northern Lights" which is from their upcoming album Upper Air. The album will be available on July 7th from Dead Oceans. Bowerbirds - "Northern Lights"
You can catch Bowerbirds live when they play Phoenix 08/06 at the Rhythm Room.

Video: Bob Dylan - "Beyond Here Lies Nothing"
Bob Dylan has a new video for his song "Beyond Here Lies Nothing" from his latest LP entitled Together Through Life. The video, directed by Nash Edgerton, is an unusual video for sure but a good one. The video is up exclusively at IFC.com and they didn't allow embeding so you'll have to click on the link to watch it.
For those who do watch it please leave a comment if you, like me, think that this song sounds a lot like "Way Down In The Hole", the theme song from the HBO show The Wire.

preview: Liechtenstein "Survival Strategies In A Modern World"
OK..I admit it, I pretty much only preview/review stuff I like. Why would I waste my time writing a scathing review of someones hard work when I feel it's much meaner to just ignore them, they might just take the hint and go back to work at Starbucks or the Dockers Outlet store. I only bring this up because I love Liechtenstein's new album and I didn't want you to think I am just saying that because I am a whore or something (I am a whore but I don't let it effect my journalistic integrity). We already broke the news about Liechtenstein signing to Slumberland and that they have a new album coming out etc...etc...so no need to get into that again leaving us that much more time to get to know each other...you, me and your dad (you should really talk to him about the drinking, its getting out of hand) and talk about Survival Strategies In A Modern World and why it's going to be way high up on my best of the year list and if there is any justice in the world several other peoples as well. The beauty of this album is it's simplicity, simple bass line, strumming guitar, chilled out drums leaving tons room for the boner inducing three part harmonies that would sound just as good acapella (maybe even better) from your dorm and or rumpus room. It instantly makes me feel like I am Jude Law cruising around Berlin on a Vespa decked out in a suit with a skinny tie. The only problem I have with Survival Strategies In A Modern World is the just over 22 min. length.
You will hereby mark calendars for the digital release on May 26th or if you prefer to wait till June 9th you can get it on CD...but that would just be a lesson in self control and who needs that in a digital world? Dummies, that's who...dummies, are you a dummy? I didn't think so, get it on May 26th ;-)

Monday Concert Calendar: The Silent Years
[photo by Silent Giants]Holy crap, you guys this is our 400th post! Hooray for us. Anyways, down to the music.
Who: The Silent Years
Where: The Rhythm Room
When: 6:45 Showtime

Why: To be totally honest I listened to The Silent Years for the very first time today before writing this post. But I was so taken by the music I heard on their MySpace page that I purchased their 2008 album The Globe. Also performing tonight is J.D. Stooks, Dylan Thomas & Pals, Really Big Birds, and The Diadem.
Iron and Wine - "Belated Promise Ring"

Boys and Frogs - "Hearts Over Waves"
[photo by Rachel Ashjian]It's always a treat to discover great new music and it's always a little bit better when that music is being made by someone in your city. The band Boys and Frogs are a new band that have only been around since January but sound as if they've been playing together a lot longer. I was instantly hooked after only a few seconds of listening to their song "Hearts Over Waves" which you can listen to below.
Boys and Frogs - "Hearts Over Waves"
Boys and Frogs are currently recording in the studio and hope to have an EP out by the end of the summer or early fall.
You can catch the band live when the play this Wednesday (5/13) at Modified Arts or Thursday (5/14) at The Rogue Bar. You can also check out the band at their MySpace page.

Video: Cam’ron, "Cookies-N-Apple Juice/Silky (No Homo)"(NSFW)
This video is so absurd and ridiculous and so far over the top of anything that you can call "good" that is ended up being awesome. I mean...what can you say about a dude that uses the acting method of "seizure" to cover a half nekid chick with apple juice? Around the corner fudge is made, indeed Cam'ron...indeed.

Just Announced: Yeah Yeah Yeahs To Play Marquee Theatre June 8th

This summer's concert schedule is shaping up quite nicely. We just announced yesterday that Jenny Lewis will be playing Marquee Theatre on July 11th and today we just found out via the Up On The Sun blog that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs will be playing Marquee Theatre on June 8th. It took a little while for the YYYs' latest album It's Blitz! to grow on us but I fully expect a fantastic show from the New York rockers.
Tickets go on sale this Tuesday for $25. No word yet on who opens the show. Check out Stateside Presents' website for more info.

Yahowa 13 "Magnificence of the Memory"
This is the back cover because it's cooler than the frontOK guys it's almost the weekend and if you were planning on dropping a whole crap load of acid over the next few days then boy do I have the album for you. I guess not really since it's not out in stores or anything yet but I guess that's even better because it will give you some time to find the copious amounts of acid you are going to need to make it through this album.
If you don't know who Yahowa 13 are then let me give you a little history lesson, they are a ultra psychedelic rock band fronted by this dude Father Yod who was the leader of a cult going by the name of The Source Family. Compared to other cults I would say that The Source Family was pretty tame, the just ran a vegetarian restaurant in the Hollywood Hills and make crazy music.
From my extensive internet research I have learned that they recorded something like 65 albums worth of material but only put out 9 LP's and Magnificence of the Memory is a collection of lost tracks...or something. Most of the album is weird drug induced jamming but there are a couple really cool songs on there, "Treat You So Right" and "It's A Knack" appear to be actual songs with words but by far the coolest song is "Nam Yo Ho Renge Kyo" a song that makes you feel like you are in the second half of Full Metal Jacket. Overall I would look at this a period piece to play for your friends at 2 am after smoking a ton of stuff and having a real urge to melt their brains. This particular album comes out on June 23rd but you can always check out a couple of their other albums on yea old Amazon in the meantime.
Here are a couple tracks from the Magnificence of the Memory enjoy:
Yahowa 13 - "Nam Yo Ho Renge Kyo"

Wilco (The Album) Cover Art
In our undying efforts to bring you all the Wilco news we can (except that whole lawsuit thing....BORING) we present the album cover for Wilco (The Album). Apparently they have camels (that like to party) in Milwaukee...who knew? I am getting so anty in my pantsy for the Tucson show in June and the new album in June. Wilco might just make summer in Phoenix bearable for once.
Just Announced: Jenny Lewis Playing Marquee Theatre On July 11th

It was just announced on the Stateside Presents website that on July 11th Jenny Lewis will be playing the Marquee Theatre. Personally, I'm a huge fan of Jenny Lewis and would list her 2006 release with The Watson Twins, Rabbit Fur Coat, as one of my favorite albums of all time. Definitely psyched for this show. Tickets will be $17 and will go on sale Wednesday, May 13th. Heartless Bastards open the show.

Saddles - "The Philanthropist"

We here at Electric Mustache are always happiest when we get to bring you brand new music from local artists. Today we have an exclusive new song from Saddles. Saddles is the moniker of Charles Barth, a local Phoenix musician who is set to release his new album Shame On You, Chatterer this Saturday, May 9th via River Jones Music Label. We've only had a chance to listen to a few tracks off of the new album but like what we hear a lot. The music is heartfelt and deeply personal. Enjoy a listen from a track from the new album entitled "The Philanthropist".
Saddles - "The Philanthropist"
The album Shame On You, Chatterer is already available to purchase online through iTunes. This Saturday, Saddles will be performing at a CD release party held at Modified Arts. Free copies of the CD will be given away with paid entrance. Also performing on the show are Courtney Marie Andrews, Gospel Claws, and You, Me, and Apollo.
Mos Def - "Casa Bey"

Its been almost five years since Mos Def has released a solo album but he's finally back with a new album entitled Casa Bey. The new album is set to be released June 9th via Downtown and will feature guest spots from Talib Kweli, Slick Rick, Mad Lib and others. You can listen to the title track from the album below.
P.S. - That new Mos Def movie, Next Day Air, looks pretty awful. Glad he still makes good music.

Video: Jason Lytle - "I Am Lost(And The Moment Cannot Last)"
Here is a video from former Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle for the song "I Am Lost(And The Moment Cannot Last)". The song appears on Lytle's debut album as a solo act Yours Truly, The Commuter. I'm not too familiar with Lytle's previous efforts with Grandaddy but I really like this song and video. If you like it too and would like to hear more you can stream the new album in its entirety over NPR.
The album Yours Truly, The Commuter comes out May 19th on Anti.
Thursday Concert Calendar: The Stiletto Formal, The Forecast, Saigon

A couple of interesting shows tonight in Phoenix. As always be sure to check out SilverPlatter.info for a full list of shows and events happening tonight. Here are our recommended shows.
If you are a fan of the HBO show Entourage you might remember when Turtle was the manager of rapper by the name of Saigon. Well, he's a real rapper and he's going to be performing tonight in Tempe at Club Red.
If hip-hop is not you're thing you can head over to the Rhythm Room and check out Austin folk singer Bob Schneider. Schneider just released a new album in January entitled When The Sun Breaks Down on the Moon and will be playing some new tunes from the album. Opening the show are Jason Shannon and Charlie Mars.
Personally, I recommend you make your way down to Modified Arts tonight to see local favorite The Stiletto Formal. The Stiletto Formal are in the midst of a west cost tour but make a stop at Modified tonight along with The Forecast.

Video: Reverie Sound Revue - "An Anniversary Away"
In an effort to reclaim my indie cred I thought I'd post a new video from Canadian group Reverie Sound Revue. The group features Lisa Lobsinger of Broken Social Scene, a personal favorite of mine. The track "An Anniversary Away" can be found on RSR's self-titled debut album. An album, that interestingly enough, was completed without any of the five members of Reverie Sound Revue ever being in the studio at the same time.
Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis
The above video has absolutely nothing to do with music and everything to do with making me laugh. This video contains two of my favorite things; actress Natalie Portman and comedian Zach Galifianakis. When you put those things together, well, sir, you've made my day.
If this is the first time seeing Zach Galifianakis' online talk show Between Two Ferns than I highly recommend you go back and look through past episodes. The one with John Hamm of AMC's Mad Men is particularly funny.
Wednesday Concert Calendar: Magnolia Electric Company
Happy Wednesday, everybody! I hope you all had a safe and shame filled Cinco de Mayo full of cheap Mexican beer and regret. Yeah, that's how I roll. Anyway, lets focus on what is going on tonight in Phoenix. As always be sure to check out SilverPlatter.info for a full list of shows and events.Obviously, the big news tonight is the Dave Matthews Band playing at Crickett Pavillion. Now, I know that a lot of people might not think it would be cool to go see this show or for that matter even like Dave Matthews. But to be honest I've always kind of liked his music. Cool or not, for my money I recommend you guys go check out Magnolia Electric Co. at Modified Arts.
Who: Magnolia Electric Co. and Farewell Review
Where: Modified Arts
When: 8:30 Showtime
Cost: $9-$10
Why: Chicago based Magnolia Electric Co. have a reputation for putting on amazing shows. I've never had the opportunity to see them live before but really enjoy thier music. Local favorites Farewell Review open the show.
Listen: MP3: Magnolia Electric Co.-"Lonsome Valley"
Video: Grizzly Bear - "Two Weeks"(Live on Jools Holland)
Jools Holland sure knows how to book 'em. This guy always has some top notch bands on his show.
Grizzly Bear stopped by the Jools Holland show last night to perform a couple of tracks of their upcoming album Veckatimest. Sorry about the whole "evaluation copy" thing across the screen there. As soon as a non-evaluation copy of the video is available I'll re-post [update: new video embeded].
Grizzly Bear's album Veckatimest is available 5/26 via Warp.

Video: The Streets - "He's Behind You, He's Got Swine Flu"
Good grief, it seems like no matter where I turn I can't escape some media outlet without another story on swine flu. Even Mike Skinner of The Streets is getting in on the act.
Skinner previously released several new tracks via his Twitter and now he's got a new one with some visual assistance.
Black Lips - "Arboles de la Barranca"(MP3)

I've been sitting on this track for a few days now. I felt that it would be better to wait and post it on Cinco de Mayo. You know, since the song is in Spanish and all.
A number of indie artists, including Black Lips, Devendra Banhart, and Juana Molina have contributed covers of some traditional Mexican standards for the soundtrack to the upcoming film Rudo y Cursi. The film is about two brothers played by Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal who play soccer for the local village team and are recruited to play soccer for rival teams in the big city. You can catch a trailer for the film here.
Check out the song "Arboles de la Barranca" from the Black Lips below.
mp3:
Black Lips-"Arboles de la Barranca"
You can pick up the Rudo y Cursi soundtrack on iTunes today and in stores on June 9th via Nacional.
New Music Tuesday: St. Vincent, Conor Oberst, Pink Mountaintops
A great week for new releases this week. The standout in the crowd, for me at least, is the St. Vincent's second album, Actor. I know it's a little early in the year to be declaring favorite albums of the year but this is easily a top contender for me.Also out this week is Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band's Outer South. I've been listening to this album a lot since NPR started streaming this album in its entirety last week. I also recommend checking out the album Outside Love from Pink Mountaintops.
Here is a full list of this weeks recommended album:
Akron/Family: Set Em Wild, Set Em Free
Arctic Monkeys: At the Apollo (CD with Bonus DVD)
British Sea Power: Man of Aran (CD+DVD)
Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band: Outer South
Double Dagger: More
Horrors: Primary Colours

New Site...What Do You Think?
Video: Pink Mountaintops - "While We Were Dreaming"
We've been pretty excited about the new album from Stephen McBean's other band, Pink Mountaintops. We've already brought you two tracks from the album Outside Love and now we have a video for the song "While We Were Dreaming". The video is a simple and intimate clip that I feel fits perfectly with the music of Pink Mountaintops.
You can pick up the new album Outside Love tomorrow(5/5) via Jagjaguwar. You can also stream the full album at the bands Myspace page.
One for the Team's New EP is Tits
In my magical opinion one of the best things that can happen to a lazy person is getting an email with something totally awesome that you have never heard before. It's so much better than finding it yourself after several minutes of hard internet searching and WAY better than discovering a new band at a show or some other crap that requires you to leave the house. So when I got an email from One for the Team containing a download link for their new EP and it turned out to be the "cats pajamas" every lazy fiber of my being wanted to jump for joy but all I was able to muster was this post.I am finding it hard to compare it to something to give you an idea of what to expect, the closest I have come is Fleet Foxes+Panda Bear+Matt and Kim-50 Cent/Peter Bjorn & John=One for the Team. I am really bad at math so please take a listen and let me know if that equation is even a little accurate.
If I were a person that didn't already have Build a Garden I would be going to my local Walgreen's and buying one of those iTunes cards and using that card to purchase Build a Garden via iTunes or maybe you can just go to their site and buy it there or maybe even Amazon or something. You know what? I am not your accountant (see previous math above), I don't get paid to tell you where to buy shit ok?!?
All I can tell you is that it came out on March 31st on Afternoon Records. And they are also on a tour that happens to be coming to Phoenix, here are the dates friends.

Blue Roses - "I Am Leaving"

Its been pretty slow on the news front today. Not that that is always a bad thing. Sometimes that is exactly what I need to discover new music. One discovery I'm glad I made today is Blue Roses. Blue Roses is the moniker of Laura Groves from Bradford in the UK. Her self-titled debut album has already been released abroad to critical acclaim. Check out the first single "I Am Leaving" below.
mp3:
Blue Roses-"I Am Leaving"
Blue Roses debut will get a US release on July 21st via XL Recordings.
Win a Copy of Moonalice's New Album
So this isn't in our normal vain of music coverage but when Moonalice reached out to us and asked if we would like to give away some copies of their new album to our dear readers we just had to say yes...because we are whores and whores always say yes. So here goes. The first 5 people to email us their name and mailing address (US and Canada only please) will get a shiny new copy of their debut self titled album. Now if you don't know who Moonalice is then I will tell you the guitar player is GE Smith, yes the GE Smith from Saturday Night Live and you can't get any cooler than that can you? What are you waiting for, it's free.
mp3: Woodhands Cover Katy Perry
Toronto electro-duo Woodhands have taken it upon themselves to cover "I Kissed a Girl" of Katy Perry fame and while on one hand it's obviously infinitely better as far as "listenable" goes it doesn't have the lesbian charm of the original. Check it out and leave some comments about whether or not "you liked it".mp3:

Deer Tick Add More Dates Including Phoenix
So I posted the tour dates for Deertick awhile ago and had some pretty harsh words for them and the skipping of Phoenix. I think it was something like "fuck you Deer Tick for not coming to phoenix" or something like that. But I guess my berating of them payed off because they are now coming to Phoenix on July 6th. They are also playing a whole bunch of places that were not on the list before. But the point is, it was electricmustache that made this happen. Your Welcome!DEER TICK

Happy Friday, everybody! This weekend is a fantastic opportunity for you to get out there and experience some of Phoenix's best musical acts. Friday

Why: Hoodlums is presenting a 3 day music festival to benefit Ear Candy, which is a great local charity that promotes music education for kids. Hoodlums has rounded up some of Phoenix's best local bands to play this years events. Some highlights from Friday include Kinch and Andrew Jackson Jihad. Be sure to check out Hoodlums website for all the details and full line up for the bands.
Who: Wye Oak and Pomegranates
Where: Stinkweeds
When: 7:00 PM
How Much: $5 Donations
Why: When we posted Wye Oak's song "Take It In" a few weeks ago on the blog we were very excited about their forthcoming album. That album doesn't come out until July but tonight should be a good opportunity to hear some music from their latest release. Pomegranates and local favorite Turn Back O Man are also scheduled to perform.
What: TheTrainTracks.org Showcase
Where: Phoenix Art Museum
When: 7:00 PM
How Much: FREE SHOW!!!
Why: If you live in Phoenix and aren't checking out The Train Tracks then you are really missing out on some great performances from some of the best local music talent in the city. Kinch, Minature Tigers, Courtney Marie Andrews and Fatigo are just some of the bands to have performed so far. Unlike similar websites, you get to vote on each artists performance. Tonight the top three rated artists will be heading down to the Phoenix Art Museum where the audience will pick a winner. That winner will have a chance to perform at next years Tempe Music Festival.
