I heard this song and it smarted my pants right when she sang "Fuck the hot tub lets go watch TV" I fucking hate hot tubs, I don't want to get into it right now but I can tell you it involves a dragon and 17 pounds of flower. Fol Chen is signed to Asthmatic Kitty Records and you should really buy stuff from them because sick cats are no fun.
Damn, this video is a total bummer. You would think that after getting engaged to Zooey Deschanel Ben Gibbard would have a little more spring in his step but homeboy is just as doomy and gloomy as ever. Just a warning, if you're already kind of down you may want to avoid this latest video from Captain Downer and The Bummers.
"Grapevine Fires" appears on the album Narrow Stairs, available now on Atlantic.
In the latest video from the DUMBO sessions we have Alela Diane, her dad, and a guitar playing a stripped-down live version of her song "My Brambles", from the album To Be Still. Live and acoustic is the perfect venue for Alela Diane and that definitely comes across in this video.
Alela Diane's album To Be Still is currently available on Rough Trade Records.
Have you ever said to your self "Self...I really love the giant sleeves that records come in because they are so giant and can hold copious amounts of artwork...way more than a CD and infinity more than an mp3. But I am just missing something...something like bad ass artwork right on the effing platter itself dammit...all of that wasted space...THERE HAS GOT TO BE A BETTER WAY!!!"? If the answer is "sorta...I guess, maybe" firstly you are having way to long of a conversation with your self and you probably see someone about that, secondly your odd internal monologue has been answered by an artist right here in of Phoenix. He goes by the name of Daniel Edlen and what he can do with white acrylic paint his hands and vinyl is pretty amazing.
Check out his site and if you don't think that shit is the tops then you really DO need to see someone about your not having a soul.
Here are galleries you can currently check out his work in person:

Sooo this day marks a huge milestone in Electric Mustache history. Today is the day that I received my very first promo CD in the mail to review. We are a relatively young site so it might sound a little dorky but I am excited non the less so just shush it up OK!
Now on to the review!!! I must admit that up until last week I had not heard of What Laura Says but I was fortunate enough to catch them opening up for Jessica Lea Mayfield and Annuals last Tuesday at the Rhythm Room and I was very impressed if you recall from my review of that show. So I emailed the bands management and asked for their album that came out last year to be sent to me post haste. I have just listened to it about 4 times in a row in the last few hours and I am loving it to say the least. I am not going to lie, it's not what I was expecting after seeing them live, the songs are a little more layed back and a lot less "my ears are on acid" but it kicks a camels balls just the same. The opening track Couldn't Lose Myself If I Tried starts out with a freaky metronome count down that gives me flashbacks to band practice then turns into a song that would go well in a Broadway musical. The standout track has to be Waves, it's a nice slow acoustic jaunt with whistles that makes me feel like I am on the beach in Hawaii or something...or just really high. Overall I shall give Thinks and Feels 8 Beards. I suggest you get into your iTunes store click here and purchase the shit out of it.
One of the perks of being a music blogger who covers their local music scene is that you are regularly introduced to new and interesting artists. Of all the great new artists that I have recently discovered I have to say that Courtney Marie Andrews is among my favorites. I was lucky enough to visit her Myspace page not that long ago and was instantly hooked on the songs she had available. Recently, Andrews was filmed for my new favorite website, The Train Tracks, performing her song "Hitched a Ride."
I would be remiss if I didn't pass on this news to our loyal reader. People have confirmed that the new un named Wilco album comes out in June. I am sure it will have several songs on it that blogs can name themselves after so make sure you have your godaddy account login set up!!!
There is this old wives tale about how when you go to bed thinking about sex you will have a jizz party in your sheets. I am here to tell you I don't think this song is about that even though the title implies that it is. I am ALSO going to tell you that the wives tale is totally not true. If you go to bed thinking about sex you will masturbate before you even fall asleep, you only have wet dreams if you DON'T go to bed thinking about sex. They key is to get it out of your system in a controlled environment like your sock or a box of tissues, you don't want to wake up in a pool of your own spunk. What would Jesus think? Oh and Ancient Crux are awesome! Please listen to the song below and check them out on their myspace page.
"I got a Myspace, I got a GMail, I got that Facebook, but I don't do Friendster." - Lyrics from the song "Internet Bitch" from Ninjasonik
Hello loyal readers, Mike here. I know all of you just can't get enough Electric Mustache but don't worry because now we have three more ways for you to get your Electric Mustache. So check us out on
Did you guys know that Janes Addiction got their name from a girl named Jane that was addicted to the smack, the black tar, the Vince Vega juice? "Shocking" huh, they sure do have some balls being so "shocking" back in the 80's when "shocking" things got banned right the fuck off of MTV. In fact they were sooooo "shocking" that their video for the Mountain Song (one of the best songs of all time by they way) was banned from the previosly mentioned MTV. I know what you are thinking "why would a video be banned from MTV when they don't have videos?" well I am here to tell you that back in the 80's and early 90's the M in MTV stood for "MUSIC" (not THATS shocking) and not "MEDICORE" crazy huh? ENOUGH of this history lesson...sorta...I am here to tell you that Janes Addiction has been kind enough to complile a bunch of rare, unseen, unheard and unwashed shit and put it in a small cabinet and make it available for purchase. This goes along with their co headlining tour this Summer with Nine Inch Nails and Dave Navarro's new line of signature nipple rings. Please view the contents of the set below and then look even belower for the banned Mountain Song video from 1988ish.

So, you're in a band, right? Are you ready to quit the night shift at TGI Fridays and take your band to the next level? Then this book is for you. The Indie Band Survival Guide: The Complete Manual For The Do-It-Yourself Musician($10) is a step by step guide for budding artists looking to jump start their careers. The book, written by Randy Chertkow and Jason Feehan, lead members of the Chicago band Beatnik Turtle, explain how they have managed to build their career and build a huge following(I've never heard of them either). The book features topics such as building a brand, networking, creating a web site, getting booked, playing live and getting publicized. The book is very web-centric and encourages band to become tech savvy and exploit the Internet to make a name for themselves.
Okay, I know this isn't a book blog, but since it is an indie music blog I figure this is acceptable subject matter for us to post about. Also, we get money from Amazon.com whenever you buy something that you found on this site. Hey, we gotta eat too.
I have to admit I'm not all to familiar with the band Cursive. But here is what I do know: they have a new album coming out soon called Mama, I'm Swollen and they are offering up the song "From The Hips" as a free download here. From those two things I have concluded that the song "From The Hips" is very very good and the album title Mama, I'm Swollen is in the lead for favorite album title of the year.
Modest Mouse, Japanese Motors, and Mimicking Birds will be playing the Marquee Theater in Tempe. As expected this show is sold out.
The Whore Moans, KirkwoodDellinger, and 9th Street Shakedown will be playing The Last Exit in Tempe. Tickets are $6 and can be purchased online here. Show starts at 9:00 PM and is 21+.
Classic prog-rockers Yes were scheduled to perform Wednesday @ Dodge Theater, however the show has been canceled. According to the Phoenix New Times bassist Chris Squire underwent surgery on his leg on February 11th and the doctors told him to take a month off. Bummer. If you already bought tickets they can be refunded at the point of purchase.
I love Wilco and if you love Wilco then we can be friends, if you don't love Wilco I hope you choke on your mom's dick tonight. Was that to harsh? I may have let my emotions get the best of me there for a second. I am sorry and I love you and it will never happen again, just tell the Doctor that you fell down the stairs...ok?
Here is the track listing...DVD is out April 19th and they have a new album coming out sometime later this year.

I was looking at my top 25 most played songs in iTunes today and saw that the song "Went Walking" by Bosque Brown was my most played song. Bosque Brown, aka Mara Lee Miller, possess one of those singing voices you just can't help but get lost in. After listening to the track one more time I just felt the need to share.
Mark me down as an official member of the Bell fan club. The Moscow born, Alaska raised Olga Bell will be one of the artists I'll be watching in 2009. If this track is any indication we should be seeing big things from her.
Bell's Magic Tape 7" will be available on March 24th via twosyllable records but is available for pre-order on the labels website.
In a strange turn of events another one of my favorite bands just announced a bunch of tour dates and surprise surprise they left Phoenix off the list. Well maybe this means they have a new album coming out soon or something...We will keep you posted, and if you are one of the lucky Mother Fuckers living in one of those cities on this list get your asses to the show...I missed my chance in 2006 and I fear I will nary have the chance again (sad panda) Also feel free to watch the video I took the time to find on youtube and post.

Even though this music video for Depeche Mode's new song "Wrong" is only 3:09 long I would have to say that it is better than most of the full length motion pictures I saw in 2008.
The song "Wrong" is the first single from Depeche Mode's forthcoming album Sounds of the Universe which is available in April. The video is directed by Justin Daughters.
Give A Care Monthly Benefit Show featuring In Data Out, Farewell Flight, Andrew Levi Hiller, Ghost Pal, and Zachary James Dodds will be held at Modified Arts in Scottsdale. Give A Care is a monthly benefit show that aims to compel the Phoenix community to "give a care" about those around them, their friends and neighbors. A portion of each show's proceeds are donated to a featured local organization or cause, spreading positive contributions among the community one little bit at a time. Nearby food and drink hot spots team up to offer discounts to those who attend the event, enabling everyone involved, from local musicians, to music lovers, to local businesses and passersby a chance to come together and make a difference. A little help goes a long way at Give A Care, and all you need to do is show up and listen to some great music. This month proceeds benefit EAR CANDY - Kids Music Programs. Tickets are $7 and show starts at 7:00 PM.
Mikel Lander and Meredith Moore will be playing the Yucca Tap Room in Tempe. Show starts at 8:00 PM. You can also catch these two performing acoustically on the new website The Train Tracks.
God bless NPR. Not only are they a enjoyable alternative to the less then great radio stations we have here in Phoenix but they are also educational and share the same tastes in music as we do here at Electric Mustache. Over the past few months they've given exclusive first listens to albums from Andrew Bird, M. Ward, and Animal Collective among others but now they are giving us another exclusive, this time from Neko Case. I've only listened to a few tracks from the new album Cyclone but from what I've heard so far this could easily be one of my favorite albums of the year. If you've enjoyed any of Case's previous albums or are just being introduced to her for the first time definitely check out this album over at NPR.
The album Cyclone is available March 10th from Anti.
While last week was a particularly strong week for new releases this week is another slow one in terms of big name new releases. Of the new releases coming out this week here is what we like. We just posted a video for the song "Short Fuse", the first single off the Black Lips' new album 200 Million Thousand and we can expect to see the band here in April. Also available this week is Here We Go Magic's self titled debut album.
Finally this week is the War Child presents Heroes compilation. This 16 track covers compilation benefits War Child International, a network of independent organizations and that work to provide humanitarian aid t children affected by war. Some good tunes for a good cause.
Technically speaking, the band Phoenix isn't actually from Phoenix, AZ but their new song "1901", off their forthcoming album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, could be the official soundtrack for Awesome Town. Download the song for free at Phoenix's web site. You don't even have to leave your e-mail address.
In news that industry insiders are calling "shocking" a recent interview with NME magazine following their stint on the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour, which culminated in a "triumphant" show at London's O2 Academy Brixton on Saturday, Glasvegas guitarist Rab Allan let it slip that "We've always been a band that likes to stay up and party, If we didn't, we'd go crazy. I think these things come hand in hand. Most of the time it's just us four in the band - but the NME tour has been special." Color me shocked that a rock band from the UK likes to party. This news is like hearing your mom has had sex at least once.
All joking aside Glasvegas are pretty fucking good. Check out the demo for Go Square Go from their self titled album
Audrye Sessions, Bradley & The Materials, Randy Mandolin will be playing at Modified Arts in Phoenix. Tickets are available for $8 - $10 at Zia Records, Stinkweeds, Hoodlums, and online here. Show starts at 8:30 PM.
Van Buren Boys, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Fancy Pants will be playing Trunk Space in Phoenix. Show starts at 8:00 PM.
Here in Phoenix we have a variety of reasons to be thankful for the new Metro Light Rail. The light rail provides an inexpensive public transportation alternative, it cuts down on pollution, and let's not forget about the light rail pub crawls. Well, now we have one more reason to be thankful for the light rail and that reason is the website The Train Tracks. The concept is simple: take some of Phoenix's best bands and film them playing live on the light rail. Even though the site only has two performances so far, both of which are outstanding, this site has become one of my favorite local websites. I highly recommend you check it out. You can be sure that we will be letting you know as soon as more performances become available.
A few days ago we posted the first track, "Zero", from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs upcoming album It's Blitz! Now another track from It's Blitz! has manged to leak online. Unfortunately neither track has really impressed me and I'm not sure I agree with YYYs decision to shift from the rocking sound they had on their first album, Fever To Tell, to a more synth pop style.
Here is a quick snippet of the song from Imeem.
Or you can listen to and download the whole song over at Kanye's blog.
Here is what is happening in Phoenix this weekend:

Turns out Kid Cudi was tasered here in Phoenix during last weekends all-star festivities. According to reports Cudi wanted to wear a pair of Jordans on stage at a Reebok party. As you would imagine that did not go over very well with the Reebok people. Well, things escalated and reportedly Kid Cudi had to be tasered in order to control his behavior. He must have left his weed at home during all-star weekend, stoners are not usually that confrontational.
Dear and the Headlights, Kinch, and Peachcake will all be playing the 3rd Thursday Block Party in Scottsdale. Show starts at 7:00 PM.
David Alan Grier will be performing at the Tempe Improv. Show starts at 8:00 PM and tickets are $25.
It's a slow day for concerts but David Alan Grier is definetely worth checking out. He was hilarious on In Living Color and his new show on Comedy Central, Chocolate News, is really funny too.
Speaking for the first time about Actor, Annie Clark commented, "I wanted to make these songs technicolour animatronic rides."

Here is a demo version of the song "Beware Your Friends", which is the opening track from Bonnie Prince Billy's forthcoming album Beware. If this is just the demo I can't wait to here the finished product. Great song. Beware will be available March 17th from Drag City.

If you recall I just heard Jessica Lea Mayfield for the first time on Sirius XM and I really and truly liked her a lot. So naturally I immediately wrote a post and emailed her management hoping to score a interview with her at last nights show at the Rhythm Room. Since it was such short notice I did not get the interview but I DID get put on the guest list (being a famous blogger really has some good perks).
I showed up around 8pm with my good friend Ryan of Fungdark fame, procured beer and got ready for space, rock opera, old thyme local band What Laura Says. I must admit that I didn't listen to What Laura Says before the show because I thought their name sucked and they were going to be a crappy emo band. I am happy to report that they effing rocked my balls off...seriously I was totally not expecting them to be so good, well I wasn't expecting anything really but I was blown away. They are easily the best band coming out of Phoenix right now. I suggest you purchase their debut album Thinks and Feels.
So after grabbing another beer and a square we got ready to relax to the smooth sounds of Jessica Lea Mayfield but instead of smooth sounds we got a very unexpected "melt your fucking face off rock show" featuring Jessica, her giant bearded brother playing upright bass, the skinny cowboy whose name sounded vaguely Irish and a rocking chick drummer with a nice hat. If you have heard the album imagine it with Pink Floyd as her backing band. Her voice with the chorusie reverb guitar (that isn't on the actual album) creates an ethereal combination that gave me chills multiple times. I still love that time she gingerly climbed up on her brothers upright bass for a couple seconds...I still do love it ;-)
Then we get to the headliner the Annuals, after checking them out on Myspace last week Ryan and I had every intention of leaving before they played but since the first two bands were so good we though we would give them a chance live. Let me say that we were rewarded for our diligence. The 702 members of the Annuals (sans the keyboardists but especially the lead guitar player) look like a bunch of dorks that should have been playing World or Warcraft. And their drummer looks like a young Bob Seger but as they say "Don't judge a band by how retarded their haircuts and clothes are". The almost 2 hour long set contained a shit ton of awesome songs...some people might think that the vocals were a bit "emo" but those same people also like the Medic Droid so they can go fuck themselves and their 8 referring click throughs.
All in all it was the best combination of "3 bands I was not expecting to be so good that ended up being REALLY good" show I have ever seen.
Check out some shitty iPhone pics below, the official electricmustache photographer could not make it last night and the camera I took crapped out on me so I did my best with what I had!!!! Leave me alone!
The Annuals, Jessica Lea Mayfield, and What Laura Says will all be playing an all ages show at the Rythm Room. Tickets are available for $10 at Zia Records, Stinkweeds, Hoodlums and online here. Doors open at 8:00 PM. You can run into Electric Mustache's own Dr. Pony at the show. If you're not sure what he looks like he kind of looks like Fidel Castro with a hangover.
Dear and the Headlights and Gospel Claws will both be performing live and acoustic at Stinkweeds in celebration of Gospel Claws' new EP. Show starts at 7:00 PM and is free.
Hey guys, if you are waiting in anticipation for the new Decemberists album and loved the Rake's Song as much or somewhat less than either your balls or vagina please head on over to their myspace page and listen to The Hazards of Love I through your computer speakers or a set of headphones you may have connected to your computer.
Hazards of Love is due out March 24th (that's still over a month away....god!)
Here is the first single from the Yeah Yeah Yeah's third album It's Blitz! I hate to admit it but with each new album from the Yeah Yeah Yeah's my enthusiasm for the group lessens just a little bit and their new song "Zero" isn't helping much.
I may need to listen to this song a few times in order for it to grow on me. What do you guys think?
After a couple of slow weeks there are a handful of strong new releases this week.
We've been talking about it for weeks now but the new charity compilation album Dark Was The Night is finally availble. Sales from this album will benefit the Red Hot Orginization, an international charity dedicated to raising to raising money and awareness for HIV and AIDS through popular culture. The charity compilation features 31 exclusive tracks from an all-star lineup of indie musicians including Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Grizzly Bear, The Decemberists and many many others.
Even though Electric Mustache will not be at this years SXSW festival in Austin (again) the state of Arizona will be strongly represented. If you are going to be in the Austin, TX area on March 19th you can check out I Heart AZ "the official unofficial Arizona SXSW party" being presented by Max3 and Phoenix New Times.
Check out the full and official schedule here for a list of all the bands, local and otherwise, playing SXSW. The SXSW website was also nice enough to put up some mp3s for you to download.
Here is just a sample of some of the awesome AZ bands that will be there:
"Papercuts' You Can Have What You Want is the newest phase in Jason Quever's ongoing pop investigations. The relatively earthbound happy-sad pop of Mockingbird & Can't Go Back is now launched into the vault of the skies. Here Quever delves further into epic, hazy pop using mostly vintage organs, pulsing bass & Kraut-via-Ringo-inspired drum rhythms. Intact from those earlier efforts are Quever's sense of arrangement and drama, as well as his soaring vocals, draped in reverb gauze."
Papercuts' album You Can Have What You Want is out April 14th on Gnomonsong.
As if you didn't already know tomorrow is Valentines Day. Now, I'm not here to argue whether or not we should celebrate this holiday that was manufactured solely to sell cheap chocolates, flowers, and mushy cards but if you want to get into that special someones pants it's going to take a little extra. Unless they're a slut. But, just in case they're not here is a little help from your friends here at Electric Mustache. After you've filled yourselves up at the Olive Garden and you bring your date back to your place just turn on this mix and get ready for the clothes to start flying off. And shame, get ready for lots of shame. Enjoy and happy fake bullshit day.
