Jeff Tweedy to Play Phoenix This December
The last time Jeff Tweedy performed in Arizona, it was in Tucson and I missed it due to the fact my daughter had just been born. I was bummed to be missing one of my favorite bands (Girzzly Bear opened for them also!) but what could I do? Fortunately for me, Wilco front man Jeff Tweedy will be bringing his solo show to the Orpheum Theatre in Phoenix this December. Not quite as good as getting the whole band but I will definitely take it. Tickets for the show will go on sale Wednesday, November 25th. For more info on the show check out Stateside Presents website.
Video: LMFAO "Shots" (featuring Lil Jon)
If you didn't already know this ElectricMustache is headquartered in Phoenix so we have our fair share of pool parties around town (that we are not cool enough to get invited to) and when I think about them this video is exactly how I imagine them. I miss summer, these mid 70's temps are to balmy for me to handle yo.
mp3: Beach House "Norway"
I guess I better post this effing song right? It's all over the interwebs and people are already saying Beach House's album coming out next year is going to be the album of the year for 2010. WTF? I really think it is to early to be making those kind of bold statements. What if Hanson gets back together or Shakira does a collaboration with Perry Ferrel and one of Old Dirty Bastards kids or something like that? A LOT of shit could happen in 13.3 months so let's just cool our jets internets ok? This song is really good though right?

New Animal Collective "Graze"
So it has been like a year almost since Merriweather Post leaked...shiiiiiittttt. Can you believe it? Time fly's when you are having moderate amusement. The new AnCo EP Fall Be Kind is out soon and this song is off of it.

Video: Chll Pll "Tales From The Crypt"
Those guys over at Stereogum have scooped us AGAIN with the premiere of Chll Pll's video for "Tales From The Crypt" This sort of thing happens to us all the time so don't feel to bad about it.
via: Stereogum
Video: The Golden Filter "Thunderbird"
I love The Golden Filter and I can't wait for their full length album to come out "some time next year" but in the meantime we have a new video for "Thunderbird" directed by the awesome Aussie director team Moopjaw.
Video: Vampire Weekend - "Cousins"
The latest video from Vampire Weekend for the song "Cousins" which comes off of their forthcoming album Contra. I like the video, but I think the song needs some time to grow on me. What do you guys think?

Photos & Videos: Thao, Portland Cello Project & David Schultz @ The Rhythm Room 11/17/09

AwwwMaaaannnn, was it ever a good show at The Rhythm Room on Tuesday! Everybody did a great job and I couldn't be more proud of all parties involved, they sound was great, everything started on time and my shoes were very comfortable as well. If you went to Mesa to check out the Swell Season you probably had a good time and I am not going to say anything bad about you but I feel like you really missed out on something special. Thao & The Get Down Stay Down rocked out to levels I could only dream about, the Portland Cello Project were amazing and David Schultz was on point to the max! (this line was just an excuse to link to all the bands, as you can see it was some very trite/mundane/banal minutiae and I am sorry.)
After the break I have copy/pasted several pieces of HTML code that enable pictures and videos that are hosted on totally different websites (our Youtube & Flickr pages in fact) to appear on THIS website!!! Check them out please.
Daytrotter iPhone App
Have you ever been sitting on the light rail, twiddling your thumbs, trying hard not to breathe in the body odor of the guy sitting next to you and though to yourself: man, I wish I was listening to Bon Iver's Daytrotter session? I know I have. Well, fear not, because now there is an app for that. Yes, now all the cool kids who have an iPhone can take Daytrotter with them wherever they go thanks to this new handy-dandy Daytrotter iPhone application.
You can download the app here.

Video: Beck, Wilco and Feist “Little Hands” (Skip Spence Cover)
Beck, Wilco, Feist and your mom got together to cover Skip Spence’s “Little Hands”. Up until RIGHT NOW I had no idea who the hell Skip Spence is/was but he was apparently in Jefferson Airplane and did lots of drugs and now he is dead (since 1999). Enjoy the song boners!
New Music Tuesday: tUnE-yArDs, Them Crooked Vultures & The Avengers
Well this is what you get today. It's getting more sparse every week. Go old dudes that have done a shit ton of drugs!

100 Greatest Quotes from The Wire
It's amazing to me how many people I talked to who have not seen The Wire. It is in my book the best show in the history of television. It is so good that Harvard will now be offering a class on the show. If you don't believe how good this show is, I invite you to watch this YouTube video that someone put together with their top 100 quotes from the shows five seasons. I don't think they are in any particular order and I would argue there are some quotes that were left out that should have been included, but kudos to this dude for putting it together. I warn you though, there are some major spoilers so you've been warned. Shhhhhheeeeeeeiiiiiitttttt.
Video: Black Carl @ Modifest
Hey everybody, I finally had time to properly tag these videos I took of Black Carl last Friday at Modified Arts so I thought I would share them with your eyes and ears. Mike will probably give me shit about how shaky they are but that is because the floor was literally bouncing up and down. I thought the speakers were going to fall over and kill me and several other people. That is how well "the party was started (and finished)" by Black Carl that night. They even did an unplanned cover of The Gap Band's "You Dropped a Bomb On Me"! If anybody knows the name of the last song please let me know so I can update it,thanks... your a peach!
If you missed the show you have a few more opportunities to catch them again (I suggest you do)...

mp3: Minus the Bear "Into the Mirror"
If you like the band Minus the Bear then you will be please to know that I personally have embedded this imeem music player that will digitally stream their newest single "Into the Mirror" to your ears via the internet. You may also be interested to know that you can purchase this song AND another called "Broken China" (do you think they are talking about the socioeconomic problems or the country China or break some plates and/or dishes?) on itunes HERE

Video: King Khan & BBQ Show - "I'll Be Loving You"
I'm extremely bummed by the fact that the King Khan & BBQ Show got canceled as a result of the band's arrest. Not that this really makes up for it but here is the video for "I'll Be Loving You" from King Khan & BBQ Show's recently released Invisible Girl.
[via: pitchfork]
KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW @ RHYTHM ROOM CANCELED...BOO
According to Statesidepresents.com (the show's promoter) tonight's King Khan & BBQ Show with Those Darlin's has been canceled. This is no surprise after the whole "getting arrested for drugs" episode last week. And their tour manager possibly still being in jail I doubt they wanted to get any further away from Canada by coming to Sherrif Joe's neck of the woods. There is no news of any rescheduling or anything as of yet, but let this be a lesson to other bands...Do ALL of your drugs before you leave each city and make sure your driver doesn't have a suspended license OR knows how to drive the speed limit.

Modifest Day 1: Black Carl, Treasure Mammal & Soft Drink

Petty good start to the final Modifest, not to many people showed up but I think it had/has something to do with that "Greenfest" shenanigans on Roosevelt. I had to walk like two blocks or something to get there. That would also explain why it was pretty packed by the time Black Carl hit the stage...since they road was opened again n' such.
I have decided that Black Carl is the best live band in Phoenix... hands down. If you have not seen them yet you better do it before they get signed and blow up and move to New York or something.
Soft Drink rocked it out as always. It was my first time seeing Treasure Mammal and it was a as nuts as I have heard.

MODIFEST This Weekend!
Well as some or all or none of you may know Modifest is this weekend. What is Modifest you ask? It's three days of awesome local bands playing at the soon to be "different" Modified Arts all for charity.
This really is a "whos who" of the Phoenix scene. Every night is jam packed with tasty goodness and only costs $5 per night, even though they should have sold a 3 day pass for $12 or something to entice people to come all 3 nights, and if they don't....eff them, they already paid! But who the hell am I? (PS Kimber it's NOT to late!)
Here is a break down of all three night with fancy links to each bands Myspace page so you can hear more if you are unfamiliar:

mp3: Solange "Stillness is the Move" (Dirty Projectors Cover)
I have NOOOO idea who this Solange person is (Is it Beyonce's sister....daughter?) but she or someone she knows (Jay Z maybe?) has good taste in music... OR, she loves covering songs she HATES, as a goof, but either way it sounds pretty damn good. And I like the sample (is that from the Doggpound?) they chose to replace the funky "capoed" guitar ditty from the original.

Video: White Denim - "I Start To Run"
I like the original version of this video better. The song "I Start To Run" comes off White Denim's sophomore album Fits. If you haven't added this one to your collection yet then I suggest you go buy it now. And yes, I mean buy.
PS: Stateside bros, please bring White Denim back to the Valley soon.
Photos: Bishop Allen & Darwin Deez @ Modified 11/11/09

Here is a series of photographic evidence that Bishop Allen and Darwin Deez did in fact play a show at Modified Arts last night. All these photos were shot by Laina McWhorter. If you are interested in a review of the show I am of no help to you since I was not there but Becky Bartkowski was there and she wrote a review of the whole shebang, you can check it out via HERE
Photos: Health @ The Rhythm Room 11/10/2009

I have been listening to and liking Health's Get Color since September but I never really did much investigation of them as people or a band. I wrongly assumed they were a a couple dudes with a maybe a keytar and some fancy effects. But as it turns out they have a real live drummer (who is bad ass) bass player and TWO guitar players... you know, the makings of a full fledged band. They did have a shit ton of effects sprawled out in front of them and used them but the one thing thought that kept cycling through my mind grapes system as I left the show is "Holy Jesus they are so goddamn LOUD!". Usually that means they were TOO loud and everything sounded like shit, but the loudness that night was sorta justified and actually worked for what they were going for. I think they want you to leave feeling as if you were just raped by a pack of wild goat/dog hybrid things. Some people might say they take themselves a little to serious on stage but I think it's more likely they have all gone a little insane from listening to themselves over and over again and really have no idea where they are or what is going on anymore.

Video: fun. - "All The Pretty Girls"
In case you didn't already hear, Shawn and some friends of ours went to the fun. show on Saturday at The Clubhouse and didn't have such a "fun" time. Get it? Fun time. Eh, what do you know about funny. Anyways, you can read all about it here if you want. But before you go reading Shawn's jibberjabber about the other night you can check out the video for "All The Pretty Girls" from fun.'s album Aim and Ignite. Shawn's still kinda upset about the whole thing but his beef is not with the band as much as it is with those douche bag tow truck drivers. Don't even get me started on those mofo's. Enjoy!
St. Vincent Playing Rhythm Room This February
Today started out particularly crappy. Lucky for me the day instantly turned around when I found out that those awesome dudes over at Stateside just announced St. Vincent will be returning to Phoenix this February for a show at the Rhythm Room. Shawn and I were both at St. Vincent's show this past May at Modified Arts and it was absolutely fantastic.
Tickets are already on sale here for a reasonably priced $15. Our tickets have already been purchased and if you're planning on seeing this show I suggest you get yours quick. Her last show at Modified sold out fast and man was that place packed.
No word yet on who is opening the show, but if I had to guess I'm sure it'll be someone awesome.

Contest: Win a Drifter DVD Prize Pack from Filter
No so much music related as much as it is just awesome. I would kill (kinda against the spirit of the whole thing) to be able to be this dude Rob Machado. He just takes off for Indonesia without telling anybody (except a whole production crew apparently) and surfs around etc... Well they made a movie about it called Drifter and it comes out on Dec 8th and we have a special little prize package for whomever (US Residents only Please) can tell us the best reason in 50 words or less why abandoning your current life and disappearing (sans film crew) for a year or so would be awesome. What would you do, where would you go?
Video: Tune-Yards 4AD Sessions
So it looks like the labels are getting in on the whole "sessions" thing. 4AD just released a new feature on their website where they will have in studio performances from artists on their label. With the first episode featuring 5 tracks songs from Tune-Yards. In retrospect this seems like a total "no-brainer" for the labels to do this sort of thing. So it's kind of surprising that nobody else has done it before. Unless of course one of them has and I don't know it, if so, then I am......dumb.
PS I think they have some bugs in their video player so if you want it to look better just go watch them all on their site HERE
Tonight In Phoenix: Health @ The Rhythm Room

10 Music Documentaries You Really Should See
Originally, I was going to ramble on about how much I enjoy the documentary Kurt Cobain About A Son. But after thinking about it a little bit, I thought it would be a bit more interesting if I compiled a list of some of my other favorite rock documentaries. After all, people love lists. So, here are my ten favorite rock documentaries that I've seen(and one that I haven't). And please feel free to comment on any others that I may have missed or that you recommend.
10. Anvil: The Story of Anvil
Technically, I've never seen this movie before. But, this three minute trailer is more entertaining than half the movies I watch on a regular basis.
9. This Is Spinal Tap
8. I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco

Well by my count, and I could totally be missing something here but I went through the first 30 pages of Amazon's new release list (for YOU!) so I doubt it, there is 1 good new release, 2 ok ones and 1 awesome album from 13 years ago that is getting re-issued on 180 gram wax y'all!

Turn Back O Man @ Local First Festival 11/7/09

Laina McWhorter
Laina made it out to the Duck and Decanter on Saturday for the Local First Festival to capture a moment in time... four different times. Looking at these pictures of Turn Back O Man is almost like stepping into a time machine to last Saturday afternoon... If I really could do that I would find "last Saturday me" and warn him (me) against parking in that spot at The Clubhouse, but I digress. Turn Back O Man is one of the best bands in Phoenix and I have an mp3 for you to prove it. They have a kinda early 90's Chris Isaak sound if he was a serial killer and even MORE sad. Check out "Tall" from the CDR they gave me a couple weeks ago at The Mumlers show.

Stream Entire Them Crooked Vultures Album
As far as "Supergroups" go they are sometimes adequate but mostly total garbage. But with Them Crooked Vultures I think they have the right mix going. Josh Homme and Dave Grohl have already worked together to make by far the best Queens of the Stone Age album Songs for the Deaf so really it's taking the best part of that album and just adding the best rock n' roll bass player in the history of man (John Paul Jones dummy) so it's not really a huge gamble in my book. In fact I have been listening to the full album streaming on their Youtube page and it really could just be the sequel to Songs for the Deaf, and that's a good thing.
You can pre order their self titled debut album HERE...it's out next week on 11/17
Tonight in Phoenix: Langhorne Slim at The Rhythm Room
Hey guys! Did you hear that LANGHORNE SLIM is playing at The Rhythm Room tonight? Well he is and you can go if you want...Your invited, all you have to bring is a ticket or money to give to the door guy Ryan (if Ryan is in fact the door guy tonight). It's only like $12 or something (it's EXACTLY $12) and you can order on the internet HERE
Video: Thao with the Get Down Stay Down "Yours Truly"
In my previous post about how awesome Daytrotter is, I forgot to mention that I would LOVE to do that sort of thing. Have bands come to me locations and record stuff, it would be even better if they came to my living room and got drunk while I also got drunk and someone talented with a video camera taped the whole thing and some other person who is also talented but with editing put it all together and made a bad ass video. If all those things were to happen then it would be very very similar to "In my living room" from yourstru.ly. But...the more I think about it the more I don't think this will ever be a reality for me. Firstly I live REALLY far from anything cool like venues or hotels that bands stay in when in Phx, secondly I don't know any people with the skill sets required to do such things and I am super lazy, thirdly and most importantly I am really shy and keep jars of my own pee and toenails all over my living room.
Thao and the Get Down Stay Down are coming to The Rhythm Room in one short week 11/17. You can get tickets HERE maybe if Thao is reading this right now she will email me by clicking HERE and want to shoot a far worse looking video in my garage or something before the show.
Tiny Vipers Do Daytrotter
Daytrotter to me symbolizes what is awesome about the internet. They are like a really cool older brother that is always banging hot chicks. Except instead of hot chick (sometimes they ARE hot chicks) awesome bands and instead of banging (they might be also banging) they are recording intimate live sessions. So here is another Daytrotter sessions from Tiny Vipers who is beloved by music critics all over the world and will probably be super alt famous one day. I posted ALL the songs from the sessions because you know that stealing from your older brother is just what little bastards like us do. But you should really check out the source for a great article HERE.

Tix are only $12 and you can get them HERE we should make sure this thing sells out so so we don't looks like a bunch of assholes to Bishop Allen.

The "Not So Fun" Story of fun. @ The Clubhouse
This is the post that I should be posting pictures of last Saturday's fun. concert at The Clubhouse in Tempe... but things went HORRIBLY HORRIBLY wrong, so instead just watch this new video from Brooklyn's A Place to Bury Strangers then sit back and read this riveting tale chaps!
When we got there it was more packed than a porn star attempting a DVDA and just as hot and humid. So we (my wife and our two friends we met up with) stepped out to have a smoke and get some fresh air (oxymoron I know) after being inside for less than 5 mins, when my friend Amber noticed a Jeep wrangler VERY similar to mine attached to the back of a tow truck making it's way across the parking lot. I immediately sprung into "fat man" action and sprinted across the parking lot and cut the tow truck off before he could make it out of the parking lot. He surprisingly stopped without running me over and we had a nice little negotiation (via my wife Jennifer's low cut shirt and ample bosoms) and we persuaded him to let us have my Jeep back for the paltry sum of $100 FUCKING DOLLARS as opposed to the normal $120, what a bargain! Unfortunately they had already towed my friends car to the impound lot.
This may sound just like an unfortunate story of a couple people who risked parking illegally and had to pay the price but I assure you this is NOT THE CASE! We both parked in the regular parking lot in two regular parking spaces. There did HAPPEN to be a sign in front of each spot saying "residents and customers only" but so did A LOT of other spots all over the parking lot. Figuring that since we were paying customers of The Clubhouse we fell under the "CUSTOMERS" umbrella. So how did they justify our towing? During our heated negotiation with the driver we went back to the spots and they were now covered with duct tape saying "ARCADE ONLY" the arcade being the CLOSED FOR THE DAY business we were parked in front of. In fact the tow truck driver that took my jeep was standing right in front of me when I parked. So that means that he waited for us to park THEN he stuck up some duct tape, wrote "ARCADE ONLY" and pretty much fucked me right in the face!
After pulling $100 out of the 7-11 ATM and handing it right over the fucking thief we then had to drive my friends to the impound yard to get THEIR car. We tried to talk to the guy there about what happened but that was an exercise in futility we just had to hear all about how there was nothing they could do and that it was a civil matter that would have to be taken up in court etc... etc... blah... blah... fucking blah...
When it's all said and done we no longer felt like going BACK to the Clubhouse, trying to find a place to park, watching the last 10 mins of fun. in a hot sweaty mess of tweens so we went to Yucca Tap Room instead and had a great rest of the night even if our bank account was $100 lighter.
The name of the tow truck company is SWAT Towing and they can go FUCK THEMSELVES TO DEATH! Just read those comments!

Photos: Atlas Sound & Broadcast @ The Rhythm Room 11/5/09

Well last nights show was kinda weird. Apparently some people arrived late and that set off a chain of events that I can only describe as.... boring. I arrived late myself with the expectation that everything would start late as per the usual at The Rhythm Room the last few shows, but it was WAY latter than normal. But once they opened the doors around nine it wasn't so bad because I am a people person so chilln' on the patio and talking with friends is sometimes even better than watching the bands. Not so much this night, not that the conversations were not good because they were but all three bands made our wait well worth it.
The Selmanaires were the opening band as well as Bradford Cox's backing band, and even though some people didn't care for them so much I was pleasantly surprised and they got even better after Mr. Cox took the stage. Despite the entertaining albeit distracting "heckling incident" Atlas Sound put on one of the best shows of the year. I know I say that a lot but what can I do when each is better than the last?
I am not sure if Broadcast have always played last on this tour or if the whole "being late and having a shit ton of stuff" to set up made it necessary, but after the projector started rolling Broadcast put on quite the show. I am not going to say it was excellent because it wasn't, but it was really good. I am not super familiar with their albums so I was kind of going into it with no expectations or "any idea how the songs sound on the album" and according to some were not nearly as good, but since I didn't have the burden of prior knowledge I was able to appreciate what was going on right then in front of me and it was pretty rad.
Check out a few more pics after the break and a bunch more on our Flickr page HERE.
Video: Grizzly Bear - "Ready, Able"
Grizzly Bear's music videos are always a little unsettling. It's cool though; I'll take unsettling over boring any day of the week. Here is the video for "Ready, Able" off of Veckatimest. The video was directed by Allison Schulnik.
Shawn Says:
Ready, Able was my favorite track off Veckatimes I think...shit they are all awesome but yea, Ready, Able is my fav...I think ;-) But this video is rad as hell! with all the melting stuff and water and stuff melting into water. I wonder how many candles were harmed in the making of this film that Grizzly Bear provided the music for?
Download A Free Pixies EP
The Pixies are giving away a free downloadable EP to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the album Doolittle and their upcoming tour. The tracks were recorded from their October 16th performance in Paris. Did I mention it was free?
Video: Black Lips "Drugs" on Carson Daly
I had NOOOO idea that Carson Daly still had a show. I am assuming it's still on after the show that is after the Tonight Show? If I am ever up that late I am definitely doing something infinitely more important than watching Carson Daly, stuff like dressing up my Build a Bear's or "smashing all the feeling out of my legs with a wooden mallet"... You know, things that are more exciting than Carson Daly. And it appears to me that this video was shot at some sort of concert venue rather than a TV studio right? So WTF is even going on here? Good ass song though right?
Bradford Cox Destroys A Heckler At The End Of Altas Sound Show in Phoenix
Was that title long enough for you? I busted out my flip camera to record the last song of Atlas Sounds set since it was going to be acoustic and not distort the tiny little mic. And as it turns out it was perfect timing! Right as I turned it on some drunk (or just retarded) asshole heckler yelled at Bradford "Eat a fucking burger" in a lame ass attempt to make fun of his "skinnyness". Well Mr. Cox takes umbrage and calls the fuckwad up on stage. Watch the video to see what happens next. He does go on to play a really great acoustic version of "Logos", the title track of his new album but stops that short because the mood had really just been kinda spoiled by then.
I will have pictures up later on today.

Photos: Crystal Antlers & Black Carl @ Yucca (The Vice Party Yo)

If I was the type of person that had regrets in life and I DIDN'T go to this show last night I would be kicking myself in my own self's ass right now. The free drinks were great, Black Carl is only getting better every time I see them and The Crystal Antlers made me 10% more deaf than I was before despite wearing earplugs. I am not a huge "DJ" guy but even Pickster One and Tricky T were making me bob my head a little between sets.
As fate will have it the "official photographer" of the event wasn't able to make it so Steve Chilton aka Psycho Steve, the bro that put this whole thing together with Vice and Hornitos, asked me to fill in and take more than just my usual band shots. So I ventured out into the parking lot n' such and did my own rendition of a lastnightsparty type thing, Tempe style, you can check those pictures out HERE. There are several more pictures after the break but you can check out large groups of pictures of both Black Carl and Crystal Antlers by clicking on their names...just back a few words in this very sentence.
The Official Shotgun Rules
I used to have this friend, Justin, who use to call "shotgun for life" whenever we would go anywhere. Goddamn that shit was annoying. The majority of our lunch time conversations would be debates over the validity of calling for shotgun for life. Any decent, normal American knows that you absolutely can not call shotgun for life. Well, if you're one of those assholes who call shotgun for life or some other type of shotgun related shenanigans then you definitely need to check out this website.

As far as we here at the 'Stache are concerned these rules are to be followed at all times and failure to do so will result in death. Or at least us being pissed at you for a little while.

It's tequilla but it's TOP SHELF TEQUILLA and it's FREE! Have I mentioned that all of this is FREE? Let's sum this all up here...Two great bands, free booze and as previously mentioned it's all gratis. All you have to do is RSVP HERE There is one small catch.... It doesn't start till 10pm so if you have to actually function during the day, tomorrow is going to suck, but it is totally going to be worth it...right?
Video: Dirty Projectors "No Intention" on SIRIUS XMU
The Dirty Projectors amaze me with their pitch perfect (literally) ability to recreate their harmonizing style in a live setting as you can hear/see for yourself in the above video from the Sirius XMU session that they did recently.
Lightspeed Champion Announces New Album
If you were as big a fan as I was of the album Falling Off the Lavender Bridge from Lightspeed Champion you'll be pleased to know that Dev Hynes aka Lightspeed Champion will be releasing his follow up this February. The new album, Life is Sweet! Nice To Meet You will be available February 16th, 2010 on Domino. Above you can find a preview of the first single off of the new album "Marlene." I'm not sure what to make of the preview but the video looks bat shit crazy and the song sounds very 70's classic rock.
Video: Audion "Hecatomb"
I don't always listen to electronic music but when I do it's best served when smashed in with a shit ton of people inside a large dark room in London. There isn't any real music in this video and you can totally tell that the people are hearing a totally different song...if you want to hear what an actual Audion song sounds like check out the video after the break.
An Apology To Julian Casablancas
A few months back I wrote a little blurb about how much I had enjoyed all of the side projects that the members of The Strokes had put out during their hiatus. At the time the only member not to have a released album via a solo or side band was Julian Casablancas. A short time later the Julian Casablancas solo album was announced and I assumed that this new material would be just as good or possibly even better than his Strokes band mates.
The first track I heard from Casablancas' new album was "11th Dimensions" and my initial reaction was something to the affects of, "what the fuck is this?" And no, not in a good way. Way too much synthesizer there in the beginning for my tastes. Truthfully, this reaction of mine made me feel a little bit like a hypocrite. I had felt that a lot of the material put out by other members of The Strokes had felt, well, very Strokes-y. I wondered what the point of doing a side project that sounded so similar to the band you'd come from; just make another Strokes album. So here comes Julian Casablancas doing a song that was the least Strokes-y and I didn't like it.
I gave it a few more listens, hoping it would grow on me, but it didn't and I wrote the album off. After all, not every member of The Strokes could produce a great album, right? Wrong.
After seeing a couple of tweets on how good Casablancas' new album was I decided to give it a second chance. Turns out I was wrong to write the album off so early. It is in fact really, really good. And I even like the song "11th Dimensions" now.
So I'd like to personally apologize to Julian Casablancas for doubting him. I don't know what I was thinking but I was wrong.
PS: Can we please get another Strokes album now?
Video: The Antlers "The Kettering" (Fan Video)
Pretty great fan video for one of the best songs of the year. Thanks to Muzzle of Bees for tracking this gem down. And thanks to computers and lunch boxes.

Thanks to popular internet site Stereogum for hosting these mp3's
Video: A Tribe Called Quest - "Find A Way"
I love when you randomly stumble across a song you have not heard in years. I associate memories with music more so than anything else, so when I heard this song for the first time in almost 11 years it brought back some pleasant memories of high school for me. I remember bumping this track for all my friends in my high school parking lot and thinking I was cooler than shit.
So for no reason at all "Find a Way" from A Tribe Called Quest off of their fifth and final album The Love Moment. The track was produced by the late-great J Dilla. Enjoy!
mp3: Soft Drink "Lackadaisy"
Up until I saw Soft Drink last week when they opened up for Kurt Vile they were unknown to me and my ears but that changed...you know after I saw them open for Kurt Vile...were you not paying attention? The moral of this story is that they were really good and were kind enough give me a compact disc with the song called "Lackadaisy" on it. "Lackadaisy" fucking rocks. I don't know what else to say. Check it out below, you will NOT be disappointed (unless you are, but if you are you suck)! They are going to be at Modifest on Nov 13th... see you there!

Crystal Antlers + Vice + Free Booze = ?????
This party is going to be what you make of it. It just like in Kindergarten when you and all the other kids where given the same two paper plates, cup of beans, Popsicle sticks, glitter and glue. At the end of the day some kids were taking home something there parents would be proud of and others had spent the whole day eating paste. Wait a minute...I have totally lost where this analogy is even going. But I think my point had something to do with taking a bunch of stuff that is free, like booze and great bands like Crystal Antlers / Black Carl and doing something your parents will most certainly NOT want hanging on their fridge.
Have I mentioned that this whole thing is free and that the Crystal Antlers put on one of the best live shows in the business? All you need to do is RSVP HERE and then show up tomorrow night (11/4) at Yucca Tap Room around 10pm. If I don't have the swine flu I will see you there.
New Music Tuesday: The King Khan &BBQ Show, Julian Casablancas, Little Dragon and Morissey
Today is a fair to moderate day of new releases. The standout for me is The King Khan & BBQ Show (who are coming to Phoenix in a couple of weeks). I have only heard a couple of songs of the The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas' new and first solo effort but I dig them in a 80's nostalgic sort of way. The Nirvana live album with be good I am sure but just as good as any other Nirvana live album so unless you are a weird completest or something just listen to the Muddy Banks album you (or your dad) already bought back in 1996. And if you are a real glutton for punishment and want to know what is sounds like when your former heroes disappoint you beyond forgiveness check out Weezer's new collection of ridiculousness Raditude!

Video: Megafaun - "Impressions of the Past"
Awsomeness: Christopher Walken - "Poker Face"
This should be the only version of this song that is ever allowed to be played.
Video: Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys - "Empire State of Mind"
Here is the video for my favorite song from Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3, "Empire State of Mind" featuring Alicia Keys. Alicia Key's chorus on this track is flawless and makes me want to hop on a plane and spend a week in NYC.

Photos: Sea Wolf & Port O'Brien @ Modified Arts 10/30/09

It was a brisk night not unlike other brisk nights I have experienced this week outside at night when it was brisk outside. But inside the music was warm and the air smelled of feces. Usually I am pretty sure it's backed up septic tank but on this particular night it just might have been the Twilight fans in attendance that left right after they played their song from the New Moon soundtrack. I kid it was definitely the septic tank but it really does suck that those girls left after that song...not cool ladies...not cool. Check out some photos and videos after the break. Also check out a few more pictures on our Flickr page HERE.
