White Denim and What Laura Says | 3/30/09 Modified Arts

Last night I went to Modified Arts and saw hometown boys What Laura Says and Austin natives White Denim. What Laura Says brought the thunder like they always do and all I can say about White Denim is "warm blanket of sound pain". I have never been to a louder concert in my life, and that includes standing in front of the speakers at Rage Against The Machine. One might even say that it was too loud, not me of coarse but someone might. If they would not have been so kick ass I would have went outside to listen but as it were I could not unwrap myself from the "pain blanket". Check out some of the pics I managed to get after the break and if you feel so inclined check out a whole bunch more HERE.

Video: Kasabian - "Vlad The Impaler"

This video is ridiculously awesome. It reminds me of those fake movie trailers they showed during the middle of Grindhouse. If you like the track you can download it for a limited time at Kasabian's website www.kasabian.co.uk.

The song "Vlad The Impaler" is from the album The West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum is out 6/8 via RCA.

Stream Bat For Lashes New Album On Myspace

Bat For Lashes have put their forthcoming album Two Suns on Myspace for you're listening pleasure. Video: Black Lips - "I'll Be With You"

Is it just me or do the Black Lips have way more awesome home movies than everyone else? Atlanta's own Black Lips are going to be playing Phoenix shortly but if you just can't get your fill of those young lads you can check out the above video for their song "I'll Be With You".

The song "I'll Be With You" is from the Black Lips' album 200 Million Thousand which is available now on Vice.

Video: St. Vincent - "Actor Out of Work"

We've been eagerly awaiting the release of the new St. Vincent album ever since it was announced a month or two ago. And while the release date is just around the corner I can hold myself over with this video of St. Vincent performing her song "Actor Out of Work". The clip is taken from St. Vicent and her band rehearsing for a performance for NPR. The audio in this clip isn't as clean as I'd like it to be, but I'll take what ever new material from St. Vincent I can get.

Video: Cursive - "From The Hips"

This is one of my favorite songs of the year so far.

Cursive's album Mama, I'm Swollen is available now on Saddle Creek.

Bob Dylan - "Beyond Here Lies Nothin"

Bob Dylan is making a track from his forthcoming album Together Through Life available as a free download for the next 24 hours. Who says the old school doesn't embrace the new school? Not Bobby D, that's for sure. Anyways, head on over to bobdylan.com to download the song free and legal. It's actually a pretty cool track.

Together Through Life is available 4/28 via Columbia.

Proof that American Eagle employs only douche bags

So my wife and I went to dinner on Friday night at Desert Ridge, and after eating, decided to take a leisurely stroll through the myriad of shops and boutiques that make up the outdoor mall. At one point, we cross AE and my wife spots a pair of shorts from the window, so we go in to check them out. As I cross the threshold, I'm immediately taken aback and have to pause for a moment. AE is piping through it's sound tubes, Hot Chip's "Wrestlers".
>Internally, I surmised that the music must be controlled by the minimum wage employees and that some svelte 17-year old is hip to the latest indie trends. Myself, edging on 30, decide to underline the bold move, a "pat on the back" as it were, hoping to score some points with the nations youth.

"Great song", I say to the bleach-blonde male employee as he greets us.

"You like this?", he says with a smirk, "every time I hear it, I can't help but think I can make a better song in Garage Band in 30 minutes"

What, a DOUCHE - amiright?

So not only does the guy NOT like the song, it dawns on me, it wasn't from an employee's iPod, someone who poured tirelessly over thousands of songs, cherry-picking the best to showcase at his place of employ, but from the corporate-endorsed videos playing throughout the stores.

American Eagle was playing Hot Chip to the Mall-masses.

I now realize why I steer clear from American Eagle; (well, the horrible employees and the fact that I can't fit into their jeans). But I don't know what's worse? The fact that the kid didn't like Hot Chip, and thought he could do better on his (parents provided) Mac, or the fact that the corporate shills at American Eagle picked that song and it's video to lure customers into buying over-priced crap clothes? I'm still worried it may have tainted my Hot Chip love...steer me straight guys!

Video: Tommy Sparks - "She's Got Me Dancing"

To be totally honest I'm not really feeling this song at all, but the video is directed by Electric Mustache favorite Eric Wareheim so I feel compelled to post it.

Mastadon "Crack The Skye" | 9.1 Beards (Reviews)

You may have not been expecting ElectricMustache to review let alone absolutely love Mastodon's new album Crack The Skye since we are all indie n' shit but you know what? We did and we do, so there. Mastodon is one of the rare bands that spans genres and gets love from all types of people, just check out the metacritic reviews...go ahead. I know in my heart that every kid that ever started playing guitar imagined himself in a band just like Mastadon. I bet M. Ward and Connon Oberst stand in front of the mirror and air guitar to "Quintessence" I assure you they do. I think it has to do with the fact that they for the most part SING instead of SCREAM like demons, oh and they just effing rock...they rock so very very hard you can't help but to get sucked into their awesomeness, just try, I dare you.

Crack The Skye is available NOW from Reprise Records

The Suck That is Blender Is Over | YES! (news)

Blender Sucks, Maxim Sucks, Stuff mostly sucked. What do all 3 have in common? They all suck, were you not paying attention? I have had a free subscription to Maxim and Blender since 2001 and every month they get shittier and shittier. It might have something to do with the fact that I have been using them as toilet paper, but that is a whole other story. It's a great day for fans of things that don't suck because Blender is gonzo, done, complete and finished. Now we don't have to read reviews of albums that the writers never even listened to...oh wait, that was Maxim. I guess there is still one more to go. Fingers crossed.

iTunes Raising Prices! | Amazon Rules! (news)

The bags of crap at Apple are raising the prices of "Hot Selling Titles" to $1.29...that should do a good job of making them "Not So Hot Selling Titles" when we all just go to Amazon and get them for $.89. This is like that time when I was in Vegas about 10 years ago and I ordered a stripper for my room and when she showed up she wanted to charge 30 cents more for a "handy".

Seeland "Call The Incredible" | MP3

Hey you guys!!! Do you like songs? Do you like songs that are listenable? Do you like listenable songs that are actually good? If you said yes to 3 or more of those questions then today is your lucky day. At the bottom of this post is a new song from UK group Seeland, the new collaboration from Tim Felton (Broadcast) and Billy Bainbridge (Plone) They have a new album that just came out this week...I have not heard the rest of the album yet but "Call The Incredible" is really effing temtastic.

In fact read what some pretentious media outlets have to say about Seeland:

"quietly infectious - think Stereolab filtered through the Clientele's rain-streaked melancholy - and percolates with an easygoing, effervescent spirit lifted from the '60s." - Elle Magazine

"Cool tunes from a kaleidoscopic laboratory. This act combines former members of Broadcast and Plone, and their debut bristles with all the geek-chic those credits suggest." - KEXP "Top 10 for 2009" Kurt Reighley

"...Tomorrow Today places itself as the latest development of a parallel history where the guitar was an afterthought and synthesizers and sonic exploration ruled pop music." - The Wire

"this group of ex-Broadcast and Plone members has an affinity for the sounds and instruments of a bygone golden age of German pop music...vintage analog synthesizers, live and electronic drums, clean guitar leads, and subdued vocals." - Tiny Mix Tapes

"This is indie-pop for a new century that still tips its hat to the old one." - Plan B

The Show is the Rainbow "Wet Fist" | 8.2 Beards (Review)

So I went to They Rhythm Room last night for some relaxing musical entertainment but instead I got "womb fucked" by The Show is the Rainbow, who is in fact only one man...Darren Keen. Straight outa Omaha and into our hearts. This is my first time experiencing the type of lyrical and actual physical destruction by just one person. Take "Mother and Son" for example, a song that is about being in the womb and your slut mom banging tons of dudes getting hit in the face with man member over and over again then being born with clothes on. Overall the album is really good but the live performance is what you need to kill to get to. For example, if your mom tells you that you can't see The Show is the Rainbows because you have to take care of your stupid dog...just kill the dog and go (check myspace for dates), the ghost of your dog will understand. Oh and use the money you just saved on dog food to buy Wet Fist at your local or virtual sound apothecary.

Mother And Son

P.O.S. covers Pearl Jam "No autotune in grunge"

Pearl Jam, the haters of corporate control over anything have obviously teamed up with that new underground basic cable station called MTV or something like that to promote the "Deluxe Reissue" of their debut album Ten, and what better way to do that then have a bunch of people cover your songs? Minneapolis rapper P.O.S. does a pretty bang up job in his version of "Why Go" and he is totally correct when he says there is no autotune in grunge...but that is mostly because Cher had all of the autotuners in the 90's locked up in her dungeon/studio

Where The Wild Things Are Movie Trailer

Okay, I know this isn't the movie blog, but I had to post this trailer for the simple fact that Arcade Fire's song "Wake Up" is featured in the trailer and I think the song and the footage go together like peanut butter and women. Spike Jonze is no slouch when it comes to directing movies so this should be a good one.

Dear and the Headlights Playing '09 Vans Warped Tour

Local indie darlings Dear and the Headlights are set to play this years Vans Warped Tour. After playing a successful SXSW this year Phoenix New Times writer Martin Cizmar wondered if they weren't Phoenix's great hope. No pressure there, Martin. In truth, Dear and the Headlights are in my top 5 favorite local bands and hopefully the exposure the get from the Vans Warped Tour will hope them break out nationally.

Also, on this years Vans Warped Tour are other local favorites Scary Kids Scaring Kids. You can see both Dear and the Headlights and Scary Kids Scaring Kids when the Vans Warped Tour hits Phoenix on June 30th. For a full list of bands and tour dates check out the Warped website.

Lydia Illuminate Yourself Tour Video

Hello my chippies, please enjoy this newly released tour video from Lydia, one of my favorite bands and recent victim of my horrible interviewing skills. The pleasure is all yours...

Attention: This video is in working order...your welcome for the convenience.

Video: Department of Eagles - "No One Does It Like You"

It's officially Grizzly Bear day here today. Earlier today we brought you a video of Grizzly Bear performing their song "Two Weeks" and now we've got a video from Grizzly Bear's Daniel Rossen's side project Department of Eagles. Considering Department of Eagles album In Ear Park came out in October of '08 and this is the first official video from that album I'd say they are a little bit late with this. But better late than never, I say. Check out this very cool video.

From the album In Ear Park available now on 4AD Records.

Video: Grizzly Bear feat. Victoria of Beach House-"Two Weeks"

This video does two things for me, 1) makes me hate the fact that I missed SXSW again this year and 2) makes me really hate the fact that I missed SXSW again this year. But on the bright side I get to start off my day with another outstanding track from Grizzly Bear's forthcoming album Veckatimest. From what I've heard so far Grizzly Bear's latest is shaping up to more than likely be my choice for album of the year.

Veckatimest
is available 5/26 on Warp Records.

As you all may or may not know Ida Maria's new album Fortress' round My Heart dropped today (iTunes only 4/14 everywhere else) and if the first single “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked” is any indication of how the rest of the album sounds color me blue with excitement!!!

Check Out The Trailer For Gorillaz Go Bananaz

"In the late 1990's Jamie Hewlett met Damon Albarn and the concept of Gorillaz was born sometime after. At the birth of the project, film maker Ceri Levy set about to document this undertaking. The result is Bananaz, 91 minutes inside the remarkable real world of Gorillaz the most successful animated band ever.

Levy filmed alongside and behind the scenes from 2000 to 2006, from first drawings, animations, music and the musicians, through to the faces behind the voices of Murdoc, 2D, Noodle and Russel Hobbs. The result is an unsanitised, free-wheeling documentary film; an intimate, honest and often hilarious account of the working relationship between Albarn and Hewlett. With appearances by many of those who occasionally pass through this world ; Dennis Hopper, De la Soul, Ibrahim Ferrer, Dangermouse, Dan the Automator, D12, Bootie Brown and Neneh Cherry."

You can watch Bananaz online at Babelgum on April 20th.

Phoenix (from France) Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix | New Album and MP3

Sorry for such a long ass title but since we ARE in Phoenix and they are CALLED Phoenix I felt it pertinent to our lives and souls that I clarify. Now that the nasty business of post title explanation is complete let me drop some knowledge into the vacuous orb your mom calls your "love sponge"...Phoenix has a new album coming out May 25th and they called it Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix as an homage to their 2 favorite thing...Mozart and awesome blogs based out of Phoenix...duh. I implore you to listen to the just releases track 1901 below... and it's probably safe to download it but you might as well just go to their site and get it yourselves to save us some goddamn bandwidth...thanks for reading, I love you.

1901

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix due out 5/25 or 26th (who knows?) on Glassnote

p.s. whilst performing all of my investigative reporting duties I found out that this MP3 has been out for like a month...but since I already wrote this whole fucking thing I decided to just post it anyways...ok?...sue me!

Lydia at the Clubhouse Tempe AZ 3/21/2009

Hi everybody how was your weekend? Hope it was good. Let me tell you about mine, it was pretty awesome. I got over 100 for the first time in like 10 years when I went bowling on Friday night then on Saturday night I got to go see one of my favorite bands around Lydia! If fact I even got to interview the lovely Mindy White (keyboards, vocals) and I have to say she was the coolest and most down to earth rock star I have met in a long time. As you could tell from the video above Lydia was on the top of their game even though it was the last show of their "Illuminate Yourself" tour that took them all through the Midwest and East coast.

Unfortunately I had some more camera issues and didn't get any usable shots but who needs pictures when you have video right? Oh and for people like to hear my voice (please excuse all of my "cools" and "awesomes" I suck at interviews) asking people questions and then hearing other peoples voices answering them check out my interview with Mindy below:

Interview with Mindy of Lydia

Video: UNKLE-"Heaven"

Here is the latest video from UNKLE for their song "Heaven" off of their 2008 album End Titles...Stories for Film. Footage for the video was taken directly from the skate video Fully Flared directed by Spike Jonze and Ty Evans. You may remember this footage from when it was pared with M83's song "Lower Your Eyelids to Die With The Sun." Personally, I feel like the M83 song works a little better with this footage and helps give it a more epic feel. I've embedded it here so you can see what I'm talking about.

Which do you guys like better?

Stream Peter Bjorn and John's New Album "Living Thing"

Thank goodness SXSW is over, now we can finally start getting up some newsworthy stuff up on the blog. To start with you can stream Peter Bjorn and John's new album Living Thing over at their Myspace page. I've only had a chance to listen to a few tracks off of the album but everything I've heard so far sounds really good. But don't take my word for it, dummy, go listen for yourself. The album Living Thing will be available 3/31 from Almost Gold.

Sebastien Tellier "Kilometer" | Video

Why do the French always get away with being so horny? I think that the only people in the US that could away with such a video are Kanye West and Prince and they would still never get played on MTV 9 or whatever fucking channel still plays videos.

Video: Lily Allen-"Not Fair"

It's pretty apparent from Lily Allen's music that she has really bad luck with guys. Almost all of the songs on her first album, Alright, Still, was about a bad break up and now we have this song "Not Fair" which is about a dude who is a two pump chump. Oh Lily, when will you find your prince charming? When?

Charlotte & Magon "Love Happening" | 7.9 Beards (Reviews)

You guys ever heard of Charlotte & Magon? Yea, me either but they are from France and Israel so don't feel bad. I myself just heard of them today and I am a better man for it.

Here is their abbreviated back story..."after meeting and communicating over the internet for 2 years, Magon invited Charlotte to meet him in the real world and to create an "authentic and marvelous" pop album together in 12 days" So they did...and now we have Love Happening to show for their efforts. I am finding it difficult to categorize this album into anything I have ever heard before. For one thing its totally freaking me out with them whispering back and forth and for two I am getting a funny feeling in my fun area...and I like it.

This is definitely something you will be into if you are a fan of Imogen Heap or Feist. Check out my two favorite tracks from the album below, and if you like it then please oh please buy it from iTunes or Amazon and listen to it on a semi regular basis.

What's In A Name?

the band black cock

I was reading a post over at NPR about a journalist for Vanity Fair who had developed a method for choosing which bands to hear at SXSW: band names. Specifically band names that she found to be aesthetically pleasing. You can see examples of what she means here. After reading the article I thought that if I were attending this years SXSW that I would go in the total opposite direction, I would find bands that had the funniest names and check them out. So I decided to go on to the interwebs and came up with a list of bands with awesome names and decided to check out their music to see if my method would allow me to discover some awesome new music. The results were mixed. In any case, here is a list of bands I checked out and those who had some good tunes I included in this here post.

In a little side note, the band pictured above is named Black Cock, if you decide to do a Google image search for pictures of the band please make sure your safe search filter is on.

AC Slater
Beans on toast-"I Fancy Laura Marling"
Bear Hands
Black Cock
Dikes of Holland
Fat Pimp-"Fresh"
Fight Like Apes-"Lend Me Your Face"
Fuck Shovel
Futurecop!-"NASA"
Hot Lava
Hot Pink DeLorean
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness-"Lights"
Natalie Portman's Shaved Head
NID & SANCY-"M.U.S.I.C."
Pimpbot
Pink Nasty-"Mold The Gold"
Radioclit-"Kamphopo"
Ringo Deathstarr
Star Fucking Hipsters-"Two Cups of Tea"
Tokyo Sex Destruction-"Power To The People"

Live Blogging Andrew Bird Sirius XMU Session

If you are the kind of person that lives in a city with horrible terrestrial radio then you probably have Sirius and if you have Sirius and are reading this blog then you probably listen to XMU. If you are on your computer reading this then please right NOW log into your Sirius account and listen along with me to the Andrew Bird sessions going on RIGHT NOW!!!

6:32 I listened to the first half in my car at the Armando's drive thru waiting for my burrito and I have now moved to my PC....um fuck me!...it's over already?...only 30 mins I guess...I ughh kinda feel like a douche for writing this post now...but this burrito sure is good ;-)

LAKE,Rafter and Princeton at SxSTATESIDE 3/16/2009

If you recall(and you should, it was only like 4 hours ago I told you about it) there was a show this past Monday at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix that went by the name of SxSTATESIDE. It was basically our (Phoenix) answer to SXSW that is going on this week. I was there working for Radio Phoenix so I didn't a chance to see all the bands but of the 5 I saw 4 were really good...Dusty Rhodes and The River Band got their own post because they are awesome and they have a new album coming out so refer to THIS post if you want to know more about them but continue reading to hear my thoughts on the rest of my night.

I was stationed outside at the "sign our sheet for free stickers table" that happened to be right in front of the outside stage where the first band of the night Princeton played. I must say that they were really quit good despite being sans their drummer and the kinda shitty sound. I would suggest you take a gander at their myspace page and check them out, they are a real treat for your sound pussies.

I then abandoned my table duties to go inside and check out LAKE and I have to say they were the cutest most charming band I have seen/heard since I saw Ween in 1996. If you don't believe me then just check out this video...those effing shorts are so awesome that I went back to 1978 and told my dad to save me a pair.

After LAKE I went back outside and caught The Blakes, they are a couple of brothers with a rocking drummer and they remind me of Kings of Leon with less relatives and douchebagedness. Their manager was as pleasant as spring morn and gave me 3 of their CD's and comic book that one of the brothers did. Get up all on their site to check them out yo.

Then I went BACK in and saw Dusty Rhodes and The River Band, again they are lifes answer to corn in poop.

Here are some pics that other people (Radio Phoenix) took that night and some videos courtesy of silverplatter.info

Upcoming Show: H.R. of Bad Brains

Normally I wouldn't bore you with the personal details of my childhood but it relates to this story and it's my blog so bear with me a moment. I grew up in an very small retirement community about two hours south of Phoenix. This sleepy little desert town is quietly isolated out in the middle of the desert and its only real claim to fame is that is that it's the last place to get gas on the way down to Rocky Point. Growing up we didn't have MTV and the only radio station we could pick up was a pretty lame top 40 station out of Tucson. Due to these circumstances my exposure to music was limited to what was popular at the time which was mostly rap music and some grunge. It wasn't until I moved into the big city that I began to expand on my musical knowledge. One of the first things that I discovered while living in Phoenix was punk music and one of my favorite punk bands was and still are the Bad Brains.

Although, I've never had the chance to actually see the Bad Brains live and in concert this Sunday you can catch their legendary front man H.R. at Jugheads in Phoenix. When I say legendary it's two parts because he and the rest of the Bad Brains are responsible for one of the most important punk albums ever and also because of the legendary reputation H.R. has built as being one crazy mofo. Take for example the time he showed up at his record label in drag with a gun in a brown paper bag and demanded money then pranced around the office saying, "Now everyone is gonna know."

Still don't think he's crazy yet? Watch this:

You can catch H.R. at Jugheads Sunday, March 22nd with Outlaw Nation and VW Trainwreck.

On The Calendar: Wednesday

It's been slow goings around Electric Mustache headquarters today what with the entire indie music industry being in Austin, TX. That being said there are still some decent shows here in Phoenix tonight and all week.

Dusty Rhodes and the River Band | Digital Release

So I went to the SxSTATESIDE show Monday night at the Rhythm Room in beautiful Phoenix AZ. I was there in a dual capacity with electricmustache being my second priority, so I didn't get a chance to take any pics (but I found some) and I also didn't get to see all the bands that were playing, but I DID get to see Dusty Rhodes and the River Band and they blew my ass to space town! You are going to fucking love these guys more than your own parents. If you could smash My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists and the Arcade Fire together into one band but wish that Joe Cocker's more awesome son was the singer, then you might just get Dusty Rhodes and the River Band, but probably not as good.

The fortunate thing for you lucky people is they have a new album Palace and Stage coming out May 19th...but the REALLY fortunate for you part is that starting today if you pre-order you will get the FULL ALBUM "digital style" right away, that means you can listen to it for a month then when the physical copy of it gets to your house you can put it on the shelf with all the other CD's you never touch because they are stupid and you have an iPod and continue to listen to the digital version you got today. I assure you that if its even 92% as good as their last Album First You Live it will make an 8 year old boy's balls pre maturely drop.

Check out this video for The Ballad of Graff from the show to see the awesomeness:

New Grizzly Bear

Yesterday we let you guys know that you could stream the new track from Grizzly Bear's forthcoming album Veckatimest over at EW.com. Now Grizzly Bear and Warp Records have been kind enough to make the track available as a free download. Thanks, dudes!

Grizzly Bear-"Cheerleader"

In other good news, those awesome dudes over at Stereogum posted another new song from Veckatimest, "Southern Point", which you can listen to below.

Personally I'm digging "Southern Point" more than I am "Cheerleader", what about you guys?

The album Veckatimest is available 5/26 from Warp.

SXSW '09 Preview

So I promised you guys a preview of this years SXSW festival in Austin, TX and here it is. To be totally honest it isn't very good. Trying to go through a list of all of the musical acts playing at this years SXSW festival is just completely overwhelming. Any attempt to try go through a list that big while still working a full time job would have killed me. But a promise is a promise, dammit. So, this will not be nearly as in depth as I would have liked but at least you get some mp3's courtesy of the SXSW website. I promise to do better next year.

For a full list of acts playing at this years SXSW festival click here.

Ten bands to see at this years SXSW festival:

Beach House-"Gila"
Bosque Brown-"This Town"
Daniel Johnston-"Don't Let The Sun Go Down on Your Grievances"
Alela Diane-"White As Diamonds"
Laura Gibson-"Spirited"
Kinch-"The Economic Chastisement"
Passion Pit-"Sleepyhead"
Here We Go Magic-"Fangela"
Thao With The Get Down Stay Down-"Bag Of Hammers"
Voxtrot-"Kid Gloves"

On The Calendar: Tuesday

Happy St. Patrick's Day everybody! Today is the day where everybody is just a little bit Irish. Unless you're really Irish, in which case you more than just a little bit Irish but a lot annoyed at the fact that everyone says they're Irish but only today.

Because it's St. Patrick's day there are a couple of ways in which you can celebrate. You could do what we're going to do which is sit in our house and listen to House of Pain's "Jump Around" on repeat all night and drink Irish beer. You could also find yourself an Irish Pub and get really drunk. Or you can go out and listen to some great music in Phoenix. I think we all know which one you're going to choose.

Well, just in case you're not going to bust out you're House of Pain CD's here is a list of concerts happening tonight in Phoenix. Enjoy and no matter what you do be sure and drink responsibly you fucking drunks.

Grizzly Bear - "Cheerleader"

Sure, Grizzly Bear's new album, Veckatimest, has already been leaked on to the interwebs but I'm standing tall and refusing to even think about downloading that stuff. Besides, May 26th is right around the corner. But if you're just dying to hear some new music from Grizzly Bear-and who isn't-fear not because we have the solution for you. You can head on over to Entertainment Weekly right now to hear the first single off of Grizzly Bear's new album, "Cheerleader."

Black Lips - "I'll Be With You" (mp3)

The Black Lips have been a pretty busy band as of late. They just released their new album, 200 Million Thousand, they narrowly escaped Indian authorities after some crazy shenanigans, and they're going to be playing SXSW. But despite all of that they've still managed to find time to make a new mp3 available for download. The song, "I'll Be With You" slows things down a bit compared to some of their more frenetic paced singles but is a great song nonetheless. Enjoy.

mp3:
Black Lips-"I'll Be With You"

From 200 Million Thousand available now from Vice Records.

New Music Tuesday: Bonnie Prince Billy, Wavves, The Boy Least Likely To

It's Tuesday and you know what that means. It's a bit of a slow week for new releases due in large part to the fact that this week is the SXSW festival in Austin, TX. I've been procrastinating for days on the SXSW preview I promised but hopefully I'll get it up before the festival is over.

Despite being a slow week there are still a handful of solid new releases from Bonnie Prince Billy, Wavves, and The Boy Least Likely To. Here is a list of all the new music available this week that we here at Electric Mustache recommend.

An Horse: Rearrange Beds

Black Joe Lewis: Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!

Bonnie Prince Billy: Beware
mp3: Bonnie Prince Billy - "Beware Your Friend (Skel)" (Demo)

The Boy Least Likely To: Law of the Playground (import)

Les Claypool: Of Fungi and Foe

Sara Lov: Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming

Wavves: Wavvves (vinyl)

Video: Camera Obscura - "French Navy"

From My Maudlin Career available 4/20 on 4AD.

Voxtrot - "Trepanation Party" (mp3)

It's been far too long since we've hear any new tunes from Voxtrot. Their 2007 self-titled album was in my opinion one of the most underrated albums of the year. But now they're back with a new song, "Trepanation Party", which was produced, recorded, and mixed by Jim Eno of Spoon. It's a very catchy tune.

mp3:
Voxtrot-"Trepanation Party"

Video: 88 Keys ft. Kanye West - "Stay Up!" (Viagra)

Man, even as an old guy Kanye West is awesome. Seriously, this makes me want to be a rapper and save up my money so when I'm old and there is no lead left in the pencil I can still get hot video girls and party hard. This video is somewhat NSFWish.

From 88 Keys' album The Death of Adam available now on Decon.

Pre-SXSW Warm Up Party @ Modified Arts 3/13/09

As we've mentioned before on the site we'll be missing out on SXSW this year, but fortunately for us we we're able to attend the Pre-SXSW Warm Up Party last friday (3/13) at Modified Arts. The show, put on by Psyko Steve Presents, was a warm up gig to the Official Unofficial Arizona SXSW Party this year in Austin, TX. It was a truly great show with some unbelievable live performances. Especially from Kinch who, in my opinion, put on one of the best live performances I've ever seen. After the break...photos!

Say Hi "Oohs & Aahs" | 7.5 Beards (Reviews)

I just came back from Walgreens where I was dropping off some redbox and on my way home I had my window rolled down and it smelled like fish...WTF? I live in the desert, there are no fish here. Even though that has nothing to do with Say Hi I though you would want to know something like that...it might be a sign of the impending electro war.

THIS has something to do with Say Hi's new album Oohs & Aahs. If you don't know who they are then you are not alone, my parents have no idea and I bet most babies don't either, you should go hang out with old babies then. But if you are a person that has not heard of them and wants to hear more I suggest you pick up Oohs & Aahs at you local Amazon. I recomend listening to a couple songs on their myspace page because you will be hooked on their debonair styling. But really it's Friday and you ain't got shit to do so buy the mutha fucka...and if you just want to buy a couple tracks because of the great depression and you need beer money for tonight at least get Elouise and Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh because they are really good and will be fun to day together.

Oohs & Aahs due out NOW on Barsuk Records

The Dead Weather

The White Stripes' Jack White is a busy guy. He has his band The White Stripes, his side project The Raconteurs, and his own music label Third Man Records. Adding yet another project to this White has started a new band with The Kills' Allison Mosshart named The Dead Weather.

Mosshart is the lead singer of the band while White contributes drums and vocals. The band, which also features Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs and Dean Fertita of The Queens of the Stone Age played a gig on March 11th at the offices of White's Third Man Records.

You can check their songs "Hang You From The Heavens" and "Are Friends Electric" at their website here. Or just watch the clip below.

Dan Auerbach "Keep it Hid" | 8.2 Beards (Reviews)

My seriously favorite thing about running this website is getting to listen to all this awesome music all the time (except for you Marty Wilson-Piper!) and all the free drugs the labels send me (hint hint labels). Just kidding they don't send me free drugs, I buy them on the streets from a drug dealer just like everyone else. My guy's name is "One Armed Valencia" and I have no idea why since he currently has both arms. I assume it has something to do with his awesome baby hook shot, but I am just speculating. What was I saying? Oh yea, awesome music:

I have to admit that I am a late comer to the Black Keys party. I had never heard of them till the trailer I saw for Black Snake Moan (the good one in the Samuel L Jackson "snake movie" series) a couple of years ago but ever since I have been a pretty staunch supporter so when I heard that Dan Auerbach the "singing guitar playing half" of the Keys was coming out with a solo album you could color me excited.

The album as a whole is hard to define. Some of the songs are blues romps that sound like some of the best Black Keys songs and other like Whispered Words and When the Night Comes are haunting, dreamy and make me want to just chill out on the porch with 12 pack of PBR and a pack of American Spirits for a few hours. My favorite song on the whole thing is one of the dirty blues rockers though and it goes by the name of I Want Some More and you will...when its done...(I suck) I am giving

Keep it Hid due out NOW on Nonesuch Records

Handsome Furs | "I'm Confused" (Video)

Has this ever happened to you? You go through a lot of trouble to throw a house party for you and your friends and some asshole zombie shows up and ruins everything. Zombies are such dicks. Handsome Furs know what I'm talking about. The same thing happened to them in their video for "I'm Confused."

If you're like us then you have a job. Blogging, unfortunately, is not my real job, just a job I don't get paid for. My real job is what pays the bills and does not allow me the opportunity to head to Austin, TX for this years SXSW music festival. The SXSW festival is a music festival unlike no other. Over 1,800 bands and musicians from all around the world will fill Austin from Wednesday, March 18th to Saturday, March 21st. We already posted a preview of all of the bands from AZ who will be appearing at SXSW this year and later this week you can expect a preview of all of the bands-local or otherwise-who I would be most looking forward to seeing if I were in attendance this year.

If you are lucky enough to be in Austin on Thursday, March 19th be sure and check out The Official Unofficial Arizona SXSW Party. The event will feature some of AZ's top musical acts including Dear And The Headlights, Miniature Tigers, Kinch, What Laura Says, and others. For all of the event details be sure to check out iheartaz.net.

If you're like us and will be stuck here in Phoenix don't worry because all is not lost. This Friday at Modified Arts you can check out the Pre-SXSW Warm Up Party. The show will feature several of the artists making the trip to Austin this year. Should be an awesome show filled with some awesome music. We will definitely be seeing you there.

Yeasayer | "Tight Rope" (Video)

Here is another video from the charity compilation album Dark Was The Night. Yesterday we brought you a performance from The National, who not only contributed their song, "So Far Around The Bend" but also helped co-produce the album. Today, we have Yeasayer who perform their song "Tight Rope." It's another one of my favorite songs from the album and the band performs an interesting acoustic version with a little help from a chicken.

Ear Farm Steals our Mustache | Great Internet Site

OK, I guess they didn't steal in per se but I feel like we should of thought of this first...for gods sake we are electric MUSTACHE!!! I would say we should at least be number 8 on this list.

5 of the Most Important Mustaches in Music History EarFarm.com

Rocco DeLuca in Studio | Video

Rocco DeLuca video embed:
Rocco DeLuca EPK - Rocco DeLuca
I have to admit I have never heard of Rocco DeLuca before today and according to this video I don't watch enough late night TV. He has a new album out today with his band "The Burden" that I just received through the interweb. I am going to give it a good solid listen and report back to you on the amount of beards it deserves.

Nickel Eye | "Brandy of the Damned" (Video)

As much as I enjoy the Strokes and am looking forward to a new album from them, I'm at the same time not. Hear me out. The Strokes are awesome, but I'm starting to wonder if I enjoy each members side project more than the Strokes themselves. Albert Hammond Jr. has put out two solid albums since the band went on hiatus. Fab Moretti's group Little Joy put out on of my favorite albums of last year. Julian Casablanca did some awesome tracks with Pharell, M.I.A., and The Lonely Island. And now Strokes bassist Nikolai Fraiture has his own side project with Nickel Eye. I'm not saying I don't ever want another Strokes album, but just only as long as they continue to produce awesome music from their side projects as well.

Nickel Eye's album The Time of the Assassins is available now on Rykodisc.

The National | "So Far Around The Bend" (Video)

If you haven't picked up the charity compilation Dark Was the Nightyet, then please do so now. Not only is the album jam packed with great songs but by purchasing the album you are helping to support a great cause. Speaking of great songs, here is a video featuring one of my favorite songs from Dark Was The Night by The National entitled "So Far Around The Bend". Brothers Bryce and Aaron Dessner, of The National, not only lent this song to the album but also helped co-produce it as well. You can expect to see more videos like the one above featuring live performances from other artists who performed on Dark Was The Night.

In related news, if you happen to be in NYC on Sunday, May 3rd, you can see Dark Was The Night Live at Radio City Music Hall. The concert will feature several of the artists that contributed to the compilation including Dave Sitek, Dirty Projectors, Feist, My Brightest Diamond, The National, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, and more. Should be fantastic show.

Electric News: James Hetfield, Amy Winehouse, Beastie Boys

  • Metallica had to cancel a show in Stockholm after James Hetfield was hospitalized with a stomach bug. No worries though, he was released and is back on his way to the states with the rest of the band. [variety]
  • Amy Winehouse was forced to pull out of Cochella after not being able to get a work visa due to being charged with assault last week. The moral of the story? Don't do crack. [the independent]
  • Jane's Addiction, Depeche Mode, and Beastie Boys are set to headline Lollapalooza this year. Hey, whose got two thumbs and won't be there this year? This guy, dammit. [chicago tribune]

Alice Russell "Seven Nation Army" | mp3

You may or may not know this about me but I used to be in a cover band (so shocking) and we used to cover Seven Nation Army and I have to say that we did a pretty bang up version, I thought...that is until I just heard Alice Russell's soul filled opus of a cover. Damn she really puts the Lounge Captains AND Jack White to shame with those mutha effing pipes! You have to listen to this song NOW and buy her damn album you cheap mp3 stealing bastards. If you are going to SXSW then you can check her out there in person.

Devils Martini can Suck My Balls! | Shity Bars

Fucking Douche Bag Assholes at Devil's Martini

So tonight was my wife's BFF's 30th Birthday and it was all arranged that we would go to the Devil's Martini in fabulous "Old Town" Scottsdale AZ. When I heard that we would be going to such an awesome place my first question was, "Please check my life insurance to make sure suicide doesn't negate anything" but I was assured that it would not be that bad since we were supposed to have a "private" section on the patio so I was semi ok with going since I could just sit there and smoke. Now let me break down the series of events that followed...My wife and I got there at around 9:30 and went to the patio and there wasn't anybody there so we though we were early, we naturally sat down and had a smoke but halfway through our cigarettes a whore of a waitress or something came over and asked if we were there for the party for Justin, we said we were there for Amber's party and she said, "Oh your section is over there in the corner" not anywhere in the patio "you can smoke here" section. So we packed up our shit and went over there and awaited the arrival of the guest of honor. She got there about 20 mins later and all was well. We had some more drinks she was presented with various gifts and the nice manager of the bar was nice enough to kick us out of our section because they double booked on "accident" and someones 30th birthday was not special enough to trump a group of cock sucking douche bags in sport coats. They were nice enough to let us put our coats on a couch on the other side of the bar and I was nice enough to tell them to suck my dick and walk out. That is really all there is to this story. I know you were waiting for me to tell you how I stabbed someone and went to jail but I am fucking old now and cant run from the cops like I used to. If its any consolation for you I got the new Dan Auerbach album in the mail today and its really good so I will posting a review on that tomorrow. Good night my chippies and always remember that friends don't let friend go to Scottsdale.

Bonnie Prince Billy | "I Am Goodbye" (Video)

Even though we're still in the beginning of March it has been already been an unbelievably great year for music. It seems like each new week there is a new outstanding records and Bonnie Prince Billy's new album is no exception. Even though I've only heard a few tracks from the album so far, each new track stands out more and more in my head. Here is a video for the song "Beware" which is just a great song and with the perfect video to match.

From the album Beware due out on 3/17 from Drag City.

Friday, March 6, 2009

Kay Pettigrew | Fresh Prince of Bel Air (video)

That there song is pretty awesome and just goes to prove that people with actual talent can take even the most inane of lyrics and turn them into something you could play for your dying mom...to make her feel better GOD! Stop being so morbid.

Kay Pettigrew

Mastodon | "Divinations" (Video)

Are you a fan of Mastodon, yet? If you said no, well then you should be. Why? Because these dudes rock hard. But if you are a fan then I've got two really good pieces of news for you. First off, they've got a brand spanking new video for their song "Divinations". These guys are not messing around with this video. It's got everything in it; human sacrifice, cannibalism, and a yeti.

The other good news is that we can expect to see Mastodon in Phoenix on 04/16 at Martini Ranch. Sure to be a good show.

The album Crack The Skye is available 3/24 via Reprise.

[via: stereogum]

New St. Vincent | "The Strangers" (MP3)

I'm pretty psyched about the new St. Vincent album Actor. St. Vincent's 2007 album Marry Me was one of my favorite albums of that year and I've got no doubt that her latest effort will be just as good as her previous. Today she's made the song "The Strangers" from her new album Actor available for download on her website. It's a cool song that unexpectedly rocks out at the end. Listen and enjoy!

The album Actor is available 05/05 on 4AD.

Bishop Allen | "Dimmer" (Video)

Great song, cool video, it's Friday. What could be better? Just an FYI, I've been having some trouble with the above video. Some times it plays with no problems other times it says the video is no longer available. I hope it plays for you, if it's not playing for you it probably means God is mad at you for masturbating too much.

From the new album Grr... out on 03/10 from Dead Oceans.

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band | "Cheer For Fate" (MP3)

Electric News: Wayne Coyne, YYYs, Daft Punk

Here at Electric Mustache we try to bring you as much local and national music news as possible. But the truth is that there is way too much news (and too little time) for us to report on as in depth as we would like.  So we're bringing a new feature to the blog where we'll bring you all of the days top stories in brief.  Enjoy.
  • Daft Punk will score the film Tron 2.  [stereogum]
  • The Yeah Yeah Yeahs will have moved up the release of their forthcoming album It's Blitz after the album leaked to the interweb. [the tripwire]

Electric Mustache Test Ride | The Decemberists "The Hazards of Love"

If you combined a fire breathing dragon a dolphin and the balls of Led Zeppelin, then threw them in a blender, then poured in a cup of awesome, THEN popped that shit on puree for about 20 seconds what would you get? You would fucking get The Hazards of Love! the new album from The Decemberists. I was lucky enough to get my dirty blogger hands on a copy of the album (I got it from the label so chill out web sheriff) yesterday and it's been repeating on my iPhone, iPod and my iTunes non stop.

(This has nothing to do with anything but I really hate Kirk Cameron)

I am sure you have heard The Rakes Song by now (and if not then click HERE then come back) but the Rakes Song is just a taste of the madness Colin n' crew have in store for you this time around.

I would like to pause here and let you all know that going forward we here at Electric Mustache are not going to give you a bunch of hokey reviews about how the songs make us "feel" or that they sound like "a cold brook trout splashing on a brisk summer morning" we are going to tell you if it kicks ass or not, whether or not you should buy it and what the stand out track are...now don't get my wrong we will always give you a retarded analogy that will probably involve dragons or fire but we know you can listen and decide how the music makes you "feel" for yourself.

Now back to the review...If you didn't get the gist from the first paragraph The Hazards of Love is a definite BUY, and as far as I am concerned it's at least tied with Merriweather Post Pavilion for best record of the year so far. It is definitely cool how all the songs tell a story about love, betrayal, murder, the greatness of Cinnabons and revenge...but you didn't hear that from me.

Stand Out Tracks:
The Wanting Comes In Waves/Repaid
The Abduction Of Margaret
The Hazards Of Love 3 (Revenge!)

Hazards of Love is out 3/24 and available from your favorite Amazon site

Art Brut | "Alcoholics Unanimous" (Video)

Eddie Argos of the band Art Brut wants to make a couple of things clear. He doesn't feel great, he's been up all night, he's been making mistakes and he'd like some tea or coffee. What does it all mean? I don't know, but it's a catchy tune.

Art Brut vs. Satan is available on 5/12 here in the states on Downtown.

[via: stereogum]

The Rosebuds | "Life Like" (Video)

The song "Life Like" appears on the The Rosebuds' album Life Like which is available now on Merge Records.

Sebastien Tellier | "Roche" (Video)

This video may be a bit NSFW depending on where you work, so if you work at Larry's Giant Shop of Porn click play on the video below worry free. Everyone else, make sure the boss isn't looking.

The song "Roche" appears on Sebastien Tellier's album Sexuality which is available now on Record Makers.

New Music Tuesday: Neko Case, Bosque Brown, Marissa Nadler

We've been talking about Neko Case's new album Middle Cyclone for the past few weeks and now the album is finally available. If you've already checked out NPR's full stream of the album then you're probably just as stoked on her new album as we are.

Another new release that I am really looking forward to this week is Bosque Brown's new album Baby. If this is the first you're hearing of Bosque Brown then be sure to check out the mp3 we posted last week for the song "Went Walking." One listen to this song and I'm pretty sure you'll be be ready to add this album to your music collection.

Other notable new releases this week include U2's No Line on the Horizon and Marissa Nadler's Little Hells.

Hear Dan Deacon's Entire New Album

NPR is streaming Dan Deacon's new album Bromst in full. The album is due out on March 24th on Carpark records. I've had the chance to listen to a few tracks from the album so far and I'm happy to say Deacon's new stuff sounds awesome. In related news, you can catch Dan Deacon at The Clubhouse Music Venue on Monday, April 20th. I've not had the chance to see Dan Deacon live yet but from what I know this guy does not believe in stages, which makes for an unbelievable live experience.

Kid Cudi | "Sky Might Fall"

Last week a 30-second snippet of this song was posted on the internet in the form of a Transformers 2 trailer, but I held off on posting it until I could get a hold of the full thing. I don't like to tease my audience. Well, you lucky lucky people, I managed to find the full thing on the interwebs. I don't like to declare "favorites" in March, you know, since there are still nine months of the year left, but this song is on serious repeat over here. Kanye says Cudi's album is a "classic in the making" and from what I've hear so far I can not argue with Mr. West.

The Rifles | "The Great Escape" (Video)

This may look like fun, but just remember that it's all fun and games until someone goes home crying.

The song "The Great Escape" is from The Rifles' album Great Escape available now.

On The Calendar: Monday
